What's it called?

I need to force open a gap in an aluminium section. I have in mind something like reversed pliers but screw operated. A sort of sea-saw action - screw two ends together and the other ends open.

I can make something like it but there must be something already.

I have used a toolmaker clamp in that way by reversing the jaws and screws .

I have also done similar with sash clamps

I had to do this just last week. with pliers you might find it hard work and messy on the tube. I used an axe head it is narrow at the blade and opens to a wedge so you can really be quite subtle with it, using it by hand on soft material or using a soft hammer for more ruged materials.

In fact I use an axe head for all sorts of things such as driving out levers and shafts. I used it to remove the operating handle on my Hyspeed windless. The wedge is a great tool

I eventually used a piece of ply and drove a chisel between the plies.

The reason for the requirement was to extract the bottom plug for the in mast furling. It was patently a driven fit or it has expanded in service. No idea what the plastic is - it has not been apparent from the various tests I did.

Does anyone know if there is likely to be a top bearing? The equipment is by Sparcraft although when in American hands.
