I need to force open a gap in an aluminium section. I have in mind something like reversed pliers but screw operated. A sort of sea-saw action - screw two ends together and the other ends open.

I can make something like it but there must be something already.

Another possibility could be external circlip pliers, if the length to be opened is not too long:

Was that an attempt at humor?

wow I actually googled pear of anguish 'cause I also was lost. I see where youre comming from it's exactly the tool youre looking for. I had to watch mel brooks spanish inquisition to forget it

I see what you did, you went to google and typed the action of the tool to see what came up, well , there you have it. :D does exactly what you need but I think it would involve ladders and ropes and glasscutters to get one late at night from a museum of your choice.

GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND

You should see the things I got when I typed rod and rudder lubrication as I could not remember the right designations.

I love circlip pliers as pictured above which force open. I use them for splicing ropes. Jamb the pointy end end then press the strands apart. However I am guessing these are not powerful enough for what Graeme wants. olewill

"GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND": I don't think so! The revelations of how the Internet giants are invading our privacy and selling our data has put me off Google, Yahoo, gmail, YouTube Facebook, Twitter et al. Supposedly they provide their service free but as they say "There is no such thing as a free lunch"

But it is easy to get around having your privacy violated by using a search engine which doesn't collect data. There are quite a few, just google "private search engines".
I use DuckDuckGo which uses google to do the search but it doesn't identify you to Google so you are doing a search anonymously.

I won't use Yahoo mail or gmail anymore as they read your emails and pass information on to advertisers, political organizations, employers etc. For emails that matter (eg business type) I use my Internet provider's service.

Organizations are using Facebook to spread misinformation and Fake News. Facebook sells your data to, for example, political organizations indicating your voting intentions.

The search engines have to use tags to find what you want so every article, image, piece of music etc is tagged. If your search provides some of the right tags it is likely you will find what you want.

That is how I found the tools that the OP (Wright?) needed.

Cheers

I have something in a hydraulic body work kit. Like a big pair of duck-bill pliers. Put the nose in the gap and woggle the pump. A ram opens the jaws with considerable force. Minimum gap is 17mm (without grinding the jaws) up to about 120mm.

Just found this: https://www.clarkeinternational.com/shop/product/details/cs10brk/path/body-repair-kits
It is the thing on the lower left.

That is a great bonus response. I recently found the courage to offer myself for testicular and prostate cancer tests (both were ok:)). I avoided taking advice from Google as I anticipated a flood of offers for all sorts of sex gadgets.

DuckDuckGo sounds like a way out.

I've decided to use DuckDuckGo but there may be better ones. But DuckDuckGo seems good and I really must look at their website as they have a lot of other suggestions for privacy.

A couple of weeks ago I did a google on "Mt Kilimanjaro guided tour" thinking I'd like to climb it. (I'm told it is like a long hard walk). Since then I've been inundated with emails from tour operators. Google owns gmail and gmail is linked to my yahoo mail (in case I forget my password) so that is how they knew where to send emails.

I don't like having my gmail and Yahoo emails read and the contents conveyed to other parties.

I am quite sure we are not the only ones concerned.

Yeah, I've been thinking it's time to use the new law to say NO to any data or scans or tags and forget Gmail, facebook etc. (not that I use facebook, can't be bothered ) I also rather pay for a domain and use an inbox that is mine instead. I will try DuckDuckGo, +1 for that.
