Whats in a name

I know I am really going to regret asking this, as all you wags will have a field day but here goes anyway - how on earth do you come up with a good name for a boat? We take delivery soon and still haven't thought of a good one. Every time I have an idea I check it out on the MMSI web thingy and find there are seveal thousand other people who thought of it first. I know it doesn't have to be unique but it would be nice. Any ideas???? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Seriously, now.

We have come up with several potential names for our future boat, drawing on things that are personal to us. A couple of words from a song, the name of an admirable boat from the past - personally it doesn't matter to me if the name is unique. What is important (IMHO) is that the name has some meaning for you.
 
Why do you think so many Part One registered boats are called Stoatgobbler of Itchen or carry a similar suffix. The works of JRR Tolkien have been savagely plundered for boat names and any title with the merest sniff of saltwater in the text has also been borrowed. Ursula Le Guin might produce something, but you can't have Kalessin, we've got it!

Would only caution: Nothing too daft or unpronounceable over the radio or spelt (?) oddly.

Would also agree that a quest for orginality may be your thing but a name that means something to you or yours is probably as important.

Don't call it anything that may tempt fate either.
 
Ours is called Full Circle as me & SWMBO were previously affianced in the 70's and had 28 years apart. We met again and are getting married in June, hence Full Circle. Our previous boat was called Second Chance for much the same reason.

There are 11 more in the UK......
 
I have spent weeks agonising over names.....

Its not easy is it.... I even threw it open to the forum... what a useless bunch.... there was no way I could call the boat 'Grip Thribley' or 'Damned if I know'....

In the end we just kept the boats name both of the last times (secondhand purchases you see)

In the latest case, it is Part 1 registered, so we get a bit of exclusivity (but not a lot! - there's another Morgana in our very own marina, but on SSR!)

Perhaps try this site?

Our new (to us) boat is called Newtsville (we haven't changed it) - quite unusual but we love the originality (haven't spotted or heard of another one!), although every time we radio a coastguard / marina etc they always ask us to spell phonetically (ironic - can't spell that!) - such is the price you pay for an 'odd' name.

Honey pot caused a few laughs on the radio as they couldn't see the Winnie the Pooh picture on the stern. Especially when we called up a US navy vessel, I thought we might get boarded, so you have to be careful!
 
It is a dilema - thats for sure.
Just a couple of trhoughts...
I beleive privateley owned boats should have female names and they should have an element of gravitas about them, a couple of examples would be Rebecca or perhaps Christina but there are plenty more.
And I don't think ot matters a fig if someone has used tt before. Just add "of Cowes" or your favourite port after it.
Someone earlier said it is a name YOU are happy with and I think that is so true
