What's happened to Sikkens?

Our marina's monthly news letter tells us that Sikkens paint has been discontinued. Anybody know anything about this? For us Sikkens has been the best so far on our 60 year old (wooden) boat. :confused::confused: Anyone got a good alternative??
 
Nothing of note on the website of the parent company Akzo-Nobel. Perhaps a local policy decision ?

They are associated with another division of AN, International Yacht Paints. Now that I didn't know.

There are precious few paint brands that are not now part of Akzo Nobel.

Crown is the only one that comes to mind that isn't!

The Sikkens name seems to be reserved now for "wood treatments" rather than paint. Sadly though Sikkens Cetol Marine has gone. That was the best alternative to varnish that I had found.

I think I saw an announcement earlier this year that Sikkens marine products had been discontinued and had been replaced by International, another brand of the Akzo Nobel concern.
 
I've switched to Epifanes paint (as well as varnish). It's a great improvement on Hempel (Blakes) - better flow, better gloss. Oh and last year it was cheaper!

Yes apparently that is so

From the Boatpaint website

Akzo Nobel have actually closed the entire Sikkens Marine division, so these products aren't even available in Holland.
There are plans to produce an International version of the Cetol product in one colour 'Natural' called... wait for it; 'Woodskin'.​

They also suggest

Best bet is to find your nearest Dulux Decorator Centre - the sell the whole range of Sikkens Cetol products, which are the same. Just need to check the colours as the names are different.​

Akzo Nobel is International. It looks like there may be a harmonisation going on.

We're probably going to end up trying International next spring. We tried Sikkens in 2007 (and 2010) and were very happy with the results. There were 2 reasons for our choice, one being price differential against International and the other being a direct reccomendation by a fellow boater.

Anyone got first hand experience of International on (60 year ) old wood? :confused:
 
I asked about this on a US based sailing list and got the following reply.

"I called up to International Marine Paints in Union, NJ and spoke with the technical support person this morning. He told me the four popular Cetol Marine products are still made and packaged in Union and distributed from their throughout the US. He is not aware of any plans to discontinue the products."

It would very annoying if the Sikkens Cetol Marine products have been discontined in Europe. :mad: I've used them on my boat for years and think the finish is really good and easy to maintain.

Yes they are part of AN

Sadolin, Sandtex, Macpherson and Berger are part of Crown. Most of the rest are part of Akzo Nobel.

The two stage Novatec/Top is still available from paint specialists. Cetol has been replaced by International Woodskin. See the PBO article for more detail.

I have no evidence but The Eu might not have helped they have banned so many trad' products stockholm tar for one. Come to think off it Creosote was a big loss for gardens .Though it seems one source on the net seems to say the ban on stockholm tar has been lifted?
 
As a follow up to my post of last year. We re-varnished all the boat with Epifanes, as recommended by another user. Whilst not without its problems - it needs local re-treatment every 3 weeks or so - it has stood up to the marine environment much better than Sikkens. The finish is a little more "in ya face" - we rather liked the subtle matte finish of Sikkens - but much more durable.
