We went in the Swallowtail last Summer. The service was slow, the coffee 'orrible, and it was expensive, never again

Strange… I spent 3 weeks at Burnham Yacht Harbour last summer, and found the Swallowtail service to be very good indeed at all times of the day and various days of the week, can't say I recall the coffee but it must have been fair otherwise I'm sure I'd have remembered. Agree that it is a tad expensive, but then you are spoilt for choice if you take a walk in to the main area of Burnham, but I found that majority of places were similarly priced and less attentive service.

Swallow tail is still open, at least it was on Thursday, its OK in there but not my favourite haunt. The Thai is also still open, I believe they do shut for 3-4 weeks every year about this time though, so worth checking the dates.

Thanks all.
RCC has two cruises "planned" for the Easter weekend. one to West India* the other to Burnham Marina.
My choice will depend on what the weather girl tells me the day before we go.

* Dock.

Usually end up in the swallowtail regularly. Last time was a few weeks ago. Food is pretty good now and prices are fair.

Apologies for being pedantic, My Lords, but we are Burnham on Crouch, or perhaps Burnham OC, rather than Burnham OS.

(In my defence, I am a Virgoan).

Swallowtail is OK, though we tend not to go there often (mainly because neither our house, nor our boat, are not in the marina).

The Oyster Smack is very pleasant, and relaxed, with a menu that appeals to us, but, of course, it doesn't have the river views.

We've always had very acceptable meals in Sergeant Peppers'. Service is friendly, and, generally the vibes are good (as long as you don't object to lively, but not obtrusive, oldies music).

We usually go for a coffee in a little cafe next to the Royal Burnham. Nice coffee (and cake) at a fair price, and the last time I went there, was served by two pretty young girls, and it has river views if you sit outside ....... What more could you want?[/QUOTE]

Good call, David!

It's only fairly recently re-opened after a refit.

Yes, extremely friendly, helpful, service.

The food is basic, but taste and price is great.

River views from inside, too.

Great if there's young kids along with you (lots of toys, and VERY tolerant, understanding, staff).

That useful to know. Am lucky enough to still have a family that are prepared to suffer being in a confined space with aged parents .
This of course has nothing to do with grandads apparently bottomless pockets. :)

All good suggestions, we are fairly spolit for choice in Burnham.
Personal favourites,
pub, White Harte,
coffee, cake, light lunch, The Parlour Cafe, Creeksea.

I also love the White Harte, and four of us had regular(ish) Thursday lunches there, until quite recently.

Now (pssssst ...... please whisper this bit) ....... but, sadly, we think the food is not as good as it was. Used to be excellent, but now seems microwaved and lacking in taste: just not what it was.

Interestingly, we've not got round to trying the Parlour Cafe, even though I run passed it at least a couple of times a week: thanks for the 'nod'.

I'm sure we'll meet up one day, Dan ..... cheers!!

Hi,

We've lived in Burnham 24 years now and I'm afraid I've never found the White Hart good as a restaurant - vegetables always seem boiled to death reminding me of school food.

However, the Parlour cafe at Creeksea is a great recommendation - a short, sometimes muddy, walk to get an appetite then first class tea and cakes.

I can also recommend Sargent Peppers as a restaurant that has kept up a high standard for all 24 of those years - the music perhaps suits my generation better than most but the food is always superb and the wine list, which used to be a weak point, is slowly improving. Also very family friendly and a discount for dining early on weekdays. Probably need to book on weekends, even in winter.

If you want something a bit more exotic, try the Thai restaurant. Very good food, good white wines and friendly helpful staff.

Peter.

Always disliked the Crouch, such a long slog in to the river and a long slog out again, at the entrance just as easy to pop into Brightlingsea or Bradwell.

We like the Thai restaurant on the upstairs floor.
My biggest criticism of the swallotail is the bloody stupid hand rail on the balcony. Instead of a view of the river, all you see is a dark brown line right in the middle of your view.

I am presuming some third rate jobsworth insisted the rail has to be as it is for percieved health and safety excuses.

Its always :rolleyes:our first cruise of the year...come hell or high water and usually its both in early April.
25 + boats on the list at the moment.
Nice simple trip, point the boat into the prevailing NE wind , bounce and crash up to the Whittaker turn round and wallow virtually the same distance as you already have travelled back in the opposite direction into the Marina.
Then spend 3 days wondering why you did not bring your furry hat, gloves and extra warm underwear :)
We do like the railway museum just up the road. :)
