I think one of the mags. possibly March Sailing Today has just done a comparative test on handhelds. Sorry but can't find my copy just now.
Hope that helps.

Yep, I've got one, the old Swiftech 298. Hardly ever used in anger, now about 4 years old, does everything I want.

Just found the article. XM2000 wins the "Budget Buy" category with the comment that it has a few silly faults but performance is excellent for the price. Also, not very good in the dark.
Icom M31 wins the "Best Buy" award - little to criticise, excellent performance and waterproof. This is currently selling for £139-£140 and can be used with normal batteries as well. I bought one at LIBS to replace an SX90 Micro. Don't know how good it is yet, though it's quite a bit bigger than the SX but that was one of the smallest available.
Cheers.

Clive, the Silva Star is the one Nick2 brought whilst he was delivering his boat down to the Solent with you and Phil. I picked 'im up and took him to a chandlery.

Thats right Jim I remember it now. Actually ordered two from Compass24 one for another boat owner down here, plus a hand bearing compass.

Would you believe we need the handheld and hand bearing compass for the rib for the coding, shes already got a main vhf & digital compass.

And another thing as she being coded Cat 3 we have to have a 6 man life raft...... ON AN UNSINKABLE RIB, damn thing weights about 7 stone, oh and we need two horseshoes and..............the list goes on.
Be warned anyone thinking of coding a boat, this is just a rib.

Clive

Whilst that Silva got us out of trouble and works ok it fell off a ledge on board and broke so is held together with tape now, just doesnt feel that robust to me but we still use it.

Fortunately this is gonna spend most of its life in a grab bag under the seat, as its just there for emergencies. So good value it is
