Whato do you think of this mast?

maybe this works better:

is the wood in the tabernacle OK ? Some discoloration perhaps ? Otherwise it's upright and attached to a very tidy looking boat.

I'd like to see the bit underneath. I assume the tabernacle is bolted to a very substantial post taking the thrust to the keel, with a similarly substantial structure there to spread the load?

Thanks to both of you: I will look at the boat today and I'll pay attention at the two areas you have mentioned

I was just wondering whether the dark stains in the wood were looking ominous...

Well, it needs to come down and be scraped and revarnished muy pronto! You can't really tell how serious the situation is until then - I would bet that nine out of ten of the dark stains are superficial but once a mast has been neglected that long it can have one or two serious patches of rot - look, particularly, around the spreaders and where anything (rigging tangs, cleats, track) is screwed or bolted onto it and take a good look at the cap and the foot - water can collect in both places.

It looks "repairable" at a guess but one can't really tell - get it down and get a good look.

Hi Minn

well... I got there today to see the boat, she was in the water, we went out for a sail (poor sind) and from the first minute to when we moored back I liked her!

Result: she's mine now and I am a very happy man! (Just back from the pub for some celebration)

I couldn't spot a single bit of soft wood, including the mast, but from my low experience I think the first bit to worry about will be the mast. I hope it will be ok, but I will need to look into that properly. In the lowest bit, near the tabernacle it looks ok, maybe better than elesewhere. Up, near the spreaders, id doesn't look too bad, but we didn't lower it.

I know it's a risk I'm taking here, but I think I am prepared for that. Plus: I haven't see a wooden boat in my range of budget in a better condition so far
I'll let everybody know how am I getting on (no news will be good news). Planning to take her to my place in two weeks (Maldon, Essex to Pin Mill, Suffolk)l

Wish me luck!

Vincenzo
