A boat is trying to tie up in a difficult berth, the boat is big and hedonistic, crewed by the obligatory blond mopped over tanned salaried skipper and a couple of drongoes who are so posh it hurts, they are having no joy and making a bit of a hash of it, you can see whats going wrong but do you.........

Mmmmm reminds me of Cowes West ...

Wasn't a single boat ......... it was 42 Charter boats coming in for their Marquee party !!!! :>

The shananikins and scrapes watching this lot go in !!!! One boat actually tried doing a 3 pt turn in a fairway just ahead of us that was only a few feet wider than his boat length !! His anchor over the stem actually twnged through boats rigging ahead of us .... as you can imagine people were not amused .... the marina lass collecting dues actually asked us if we REALLY wanted to stay the night with them all coming in .... !!!

It was bedlam .... the yacht manouevres were a hash, when we went to showers later - they barged in and took no notice of us having waited in turn for showers etc. as though they owned the place.... they were rude, the drunkeness was way over what is expected ............... I shall not want to do it again.

And the real killer - I didn't have a Video Camera to record it !!!

I don't like offers of assistance and try to ignore them because the results are often unpredictable and require a last minute change of plan. However, I do offer assistance. I'm surprised that so many (55%) just do nothing (or were these tongue in cheek answers?).

Theres a sort of Sods Law to it all, the times you find things going pear-shaped and would appreciate help are the times no-ones there to help, and the times it goes exactly to plan in difficult conditions, theres no-one there to appreciate how brilliant your boat handling skills are..... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Given there are enough people on board, I'd be sitting and watching, until they looked like they were going to collect an unmanned boat, then physical intervention would take over.

afaik, the correct thing is to "be available" if they want to use you. Boats loaded with crew usually have enuf on their plate with four people trying to be in charge of just two or three shorelines.

but I agree - was on Poole Quay last week when a big grey thing came in. Harbour Master took the bowline, I took the stern loop then the spring. No one was jumping off that, and the lines weren't 10mm nylon either.
End of it the skip shouted his thanks, after instructing the lads to give theirs - needless to say there was no fuss, no rush and it wouldn't have crushed an egg coming alongside despite the pouring tide etc - great to see.
