It's happened to me on at least two occasions I can think of. In both instances, we were rescued by the attendant lock keepers. Once in Boulters, the other time Bell Weir. Chap at Bell Weir was in the bath at the time :) :) , but came out as soon as he was decent. Boulters was there within ten minutes of phoning an EA number I'm not sure I still have...

Seriously, if I needed to get home, I'd fix it. Usually one of the prox switch targets out of line with the switch, bit of ferrous material held near the switch to fool it and if you're careful with the sequencing it'll work. Usually.

Please, DO NOT TRY THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2 Plugs in this post alone!!

Me thinks you are pushing the advertising rules on this site a little too far!
You already have a business link attached to each of your posts. I do not feel that the forum should be used for touting ones business, nice chap that I am sure you are.

I have read and re-read RossSavage's post and cannot see how this is a plug for his business?

Plenty of people on the forums (fora?) have a signature line link to their business... Ross's post in no way related to his business!!

So, back to the original question - or rather your views on whether or not the EA should provide reasonable assistance in the event that a boat gets trapped out of hours.

Not much reaction really, which surprises me. Is it seasonal lethargy or are we generally not concerned that it is possible for boats to get trapped in locks overnight with no response service until the beginning of the next working day?

I, too was hoping

for comments from others and perhaps new members.
OK it's out of season and everyone's recovering from "seasonable jollities".

Perhaps it's because residents of these fora either
feel capable of fixing it themselves OR
don't stay out that late....

I'll put my hands to say - Yes I am concerned.

Discussions here point to the fact that the equipment does fail more regularly than one suspects, so it's not a minor problem.

EA need bullying until they come up with a solution such as -
Put the locks back on to handwinding OOH
Rather than crash the system have a reset phase as other users have noted.

agreed - or at least allow the facility for handwinding as a back up; it is great being able to open the gates at the push of a button OOH and I wouldn't want to lose that, but I can't see why there can't be a manual over-ride

Whoever thought to make them idiot proof has obviously never encountered a real idiot :):)

Last time we were stuck in a lock after the pub shut, just knocked on the Lockies door and he came to the rescue. My understandng is they receive a call out allowance so, quite happy with the situation.

May be a bit different at 4:am though.

The poster now on display at all locks says:
"Boaters use public power at their own risk. We do not
provide an out of hours response to malfunctions. In an
emergency, call 0800 80 70 60 for advice over the
phone only."

Luckily I have never had any problems!??!

Depending on the time I would be inclined to ask the lockie or stay in the lock overnight.

Manual override would be good, I remember when I was younger before public power it was always myself and my sister who had to wind the locks after hours! I recall my parents sitting back having a drink waiting for us to finish!

On another note +1 for Ross :)
