I would get the inflateable stumps and bat from the grab bag, roll up the chart into a tiny ball, step out on to the container and challenge the crew to a nice game of cricket....
I spy seems to be a popular option , but it'll be dark for the first half so it's going to get boring when all you can see is stars /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
RGIT Robert Gordon Institute of Technology ( I think thats what is was called) Aberdeen, offshore survival course, pool, cold, wind machine, wave machine, sadistic [--word removed--] with fire hose, kitted up with survival suits jump into pool from 12 feet up, fire the liferaft and then have to get in, sadistic [--word removed--] hits your face with fire hose, remember instructions, hand over mouth and nose so can breath again, SB moves on to next one, reach liferaft after bouncing up and down and try to get in, i was fairly thin and fit in those days but IT WAS A STRUGGLE to get in even with the help of the 2 at the door, finally utilised one of the waves to bounce onto the edge and scramble in. now i dont do sea sick BUT i was distinctly queasy and bloody cold. even in the makeshift conditions it was seriously not nice. the point am making is that the scenario is not quite right, you will be knackered, cold, frightened and thanking god you are all alive and safe, would not surprise me if any of the older ones was not physically in danger of losing their life after going in to the water and scrambling into the liferaft, wondering how to pass the time will be the last thing on your mind.
Stu
We'll be doing it for real in a test off Weymouth next week , providing I can get there in time . I'm not trying to make light of the situation , just working things through my mind beforehand . But we will be in open waters so your comments on getting aboard the liferaft are most helpful
I think I would need some of that wonder drug on the market as it's going to be cold and wet /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif I think it's called medicksafloppin /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
to calm ppl down and give a sense of stiff upper lip ......... play 'who can keep quitest the longest'
after about 24 hrs dole out the sweeties and tinnies /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif and ask those left in the liferaft what game should be played next /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Could be difficult /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I usually find it hard to keep quiet /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ah , back to the Medicksafloppin again /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
OK. I'd be thinking that the estimate of '24 hours in a liferaft' has often been proven to be a long way wide of the mark, and that I needed to get into Survival Mode pdq. It will take as long as it takes. Games are useful only when measured against that imperative. I wouldn't tell others of my decision - it doesn't help.
I'd first make sure the drogue was streamed, and the pockets were deployed/filled as intended.
I'd inventory and secure all the few assets we possessed. These would not be squandered frivolously.
I'd create a 'buddy-buddy' system, so that everyone had someone carefully looking after him. That works.
I'd work via teamwork to minimise heat-energy loss, identify who was most vulnerable to that, and mitigate it.
I'd then work - through others, preferably - on giving each a set of time-consuming tasks to address. It takes quite a while for many to adjust to the new reality. Often, too long......
Survival is only assured when you are standing on the deck of a rescue vessel, with a mug of hot soup in your hand and a blanket around you. Not a minute before.....
Very good advice Bill . Although this will be a test it will also be carried out in as near as possible real conditions with only the normal grab bag contents , and whatever we manage to keep dry in our pockets /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Totally agree. Flippancy aside, you have given all the fundamental requirements whilst demonstrating the most rigorous of all....someone must be the leader and take charge. With the guidance you suggest, your crew will be the survivors. Hope lots of others took note of that. Ta.
Is there a usb charger for my meeja player, or do I bring my own? Are we in range of any wifi hotspots? I need to be the first to post here on the sinking - which was your fault, because I did say "what's that bright orange thing, about 40' by 10' about twenty yards off the weather bow?", and you said "Lee Ho".
