For those who have read my post here regarding the Gladiateur and her problems with chainplates, this is how finally it worked all out (not).
1. Boat is examined by a yard and they give me an approximate quote on the repairs.
2. I decide to make an offer, and in order to limit the risk, I double the quoted price.
3. Before I can call the broker, I get an impatient call directly from the owner (although the sale is going through a broker). After explaining to him the extent of the damage, he requests some idea of the offer I will be submitting. Reluctantly, I mention the estimate of the surveyor (around 40'000 euros versus asking 50'000 euros). He gets angry and tells me the discussion ends here.
4. I hear from the broker, that the owner has decided to quickly patch-up the damage by himself and put the boat on the market again.
5. I checked, and she is for sale at 46'000 euros from another broker.
I was lucky not to have paid any money up front and I wish good luck to the future owner.
Let me express my gratitude for all of you who have posted all the very useful answers to my previous post.
