Just read about a device that you wear on your wrist and if you go overboard you can twiddle the buttons and get the autopilot to sail the boat back to you.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

A remote for an autopilot, that is. Could be handy in a number of situations, specially when single-handed. Does anyone here have one? Is it useful?

I think thats a very good idea, when you've run our of anchors and want to go to the pub you could just hop ashore and send boat out into the bay to sail around in circles until you're ready. Then bring it back in and off you go.

What's the range of this device? Imagine you could sail your boat from home/the pub and not have to bother with all that victualling/crew nonsense. Even better see your boat off on it's own from the SC and hop on a ferry for a G/T and then meet it at Cherbourg. I dont think!

I regulary race by inputting the way points of the cans to the coupled GPS/autopilot, send boat on its way, I retire to the bar to watch the race unfold. I have yet to find a way of flying a protest flag when rounding the cans as quite often there is a bit of argy-bargy to be had........any ideas.

you could have a line of fireworks on say the starboard fore deck with flags attached. there are commercial sets that can be set off remotely.
each infringment WOOOOOOOsh up goes your flag.

That sounds a little ambitous - there are a couple of systems (NKE and B & G), that spot your wrist transmitter going out of range and then perform a series of pre programmed amnouevres - usually a tack to close hauled on opposite tack - which as you wont have tended the sheets will be close to hove to. Quite sensible for singlehanders - dangerous if your crewed, so you can program to sound a horn.

I do like the ability they provide to control the pilot from anywhere on board - it's always when I'm setting the kite that a bouy/tanker/yacht/headland/log appears out of thin air, and I have to toddle back to the cockpit to 'adjust' the heading. On the infrequent occasions when all is going swimmingly, it's nice to be able keep control from the foredeck, or wherever is quiet.
