What were the marketing department smoking?

It might be nice to remove his name from this thread. I cant really see what that has to do with anything.

It a marketing department aspirational video advertising ( something we are not really sure but they do valet parking for boats).

The boat manufacturers are just a guilty when showing bikini clad ladies apparently relaxing as opposed to clinging on for their lives at 30 knots on the front sun pads.

I was reading the magazine last night. Suddenly ads feature ladies driving boats ( no issue - just mention it before anyone strikes) some in flowing dresses - which i would suggest would get caught in lines and be most unwise ... but its a photo shoot designed to sell boats.

Whilst we would love it I am not sure that a photo of a slightly overweight bloke ( I include myself) with his head out of the engine room hatch, covered in oil, small cuts on his hands and a pile of dirty rags on the deck and some rusty tools would really shift many boats!

From one old bugga to another. If the young and upcoming generation, the one that is going to replace us, didn't dream and have ambitions of greater things, then what have we left behind. Go easy on the lad, build him up dont break him down.
By "the lad", do you mean the protagonist or solent1?
Either way, I never meant for a second to break anyone down.

Yes, I'm the one who came up with the Stan Laurel comparison, but that was strictly in the context of the debate about what came across with the video.
For all I know, he might as well have been asked to pose that way.
Regardless, I couldn't care less about how that chap walks, or anything else he does in real life, obviously.
Generally speaking, as a representative of the upcoming generation, I wish him all the very best regardless of how his character in this video came across.

Ref solent1 instead, I did criticize what he wrote because, well, that's what his post deserved, imho. Pretty much business as usual, in a forum.
Btw, I have no idea about whether he also belongs to the upcoming generation or he's also an old bugga as most of us.
If the former, the last sentence of previous para applies also to him, of course.

One thing I'm sure of is that it didn't take long for us old bugga to develop a skin thick enough to survive criticisms like the ones in this thread and then some, also in real life. And in most cases, it has been useful to restart from there.
Now, it would be very sad if the generation that will replace us could be "broken down" just by some forum posts!
Not that I think this is the case, mind: my funny feeling is that they are developing an even thicker skin than ours, and also faster... :encouragement:

Marketing and advertising media very seldom shows the truth be it skinny models on the catwalk or living the boating dream on National Lotto and everything in between. I mean do you buy your Gillette shaver because you want to look and feel like some sporting hunk, full of testosterone and machismo or because you want to get rid of the stubble. Do you think you are going to turn some pimply faced youth suffering from greasy skin, dandruff and a healthy BO into a "chick magnet" lady slayer of biblical proportions just because he squirted a bit of Lynx deodorant on himself? Of course not but it does give a little lift in an otherwise dreary existence. Face it, what is a marina other than a glorified car park for boats and what is a hotel catering for the business market other than just another reminder you're stressed, overworked and not at home and not really enjoying yourself. Telling the gritty truth would make for sh*t advertising, but that's not the point is it. I bought a Land Rover because of the advertising. They lied, can I take it back?

Well, I am guilty of making the presumption based on other posts that this is the lad that is a start up from a year or two ago and one very proud father here introduced his sons 1st video. It was slated here too which I found unfortunate. However I liked the lad's company FB page and have been receiving updates ever since. He has gone from strength to strength and is making quite a go of this business proving all the original nay sayers completely wrong. Too many lads just slot into a company employee role. To see those with the gumption to get off their arse and go solo making something for themselves is worthy of the highest praise and who cares if they cock something up now and again. This type of enterprising youth gets my full respect.

When the revolution comes there'll be no love for boat owners.
I would be laughing at such doom and gloom perspective, if it weren't that it's rather realistic!
Oh, well. A guillotine is still better than ending sick in the bed of an hospice, I suppose... :ambivalence:

I look at this a different way. It shouts at me what MDL want to do to OV. I had my boat there for a few weeks and left..long story I'll save for another day...and it was made very clear to me that MDl's aim with the new hotel is to make it into Monte Carlo with coats on.

I remember OV year ago when it was a fun night out but now I find it cold and bland and solely aimed at Football Players and their wags!

While it was good of the film maker to come an defend his script perhaps we should return the favour and show how the forum would write it. By one person writing the first line and second the next etc.
There’s been some good stories here using this method

I might also add that in a previous post that I said it was interesting to see people nailing their colours to the mast. I might also add that is because it gives insight as to individual personal motivation. From my perspective entirely certain posters here contribute in certain ways. One in particular always seems to post with barely couched malice. The fact that he is the OP is one of the reasons I have come late to the party. How's that for nailing ones colours to the mast?

Don't tell me they've closed Harry Ramsden's!

You have a weekend off....the wife has agreed to go to “that bloody boat”. Full of excitement and in bright sunshine you start the 3 hour drive. As your approach Ocean Village, the clouds darken with rain drops appearing on the Skodia Fabia windscreen (you forgot to fill the screen wash). Your wife turns to you and says.....

‘I can’t go to Chelsea looking like this!’
