At last wodered if i'd get out on the boat - even just up the river tomorrow. Met Office predicts 5 and 6 for today and tomorrow, so does Wind Guru) but currently the Burnham weather station is reporting Force 2. Had I not believed the Met Office and Wind Guru we might be at anchor in Yokesfleet Creek by now........

Well usually, if just sailing in the Crouch, I'd go with the forecast that I like the most (on the grounds that it's never going to get dangerously bad anyway)! Worst case scenario is ending up in the pub because life on board is too uncomfortable. Oh how hard life can be sometimes :)

I seem to recall the Burnham weather station is on someone's house in the town? If so, they won't have the wind you would get at sea.
For instance I left Brightlingsea the other morning in about a F2 northerly. Halfway down to the Colne Bar I had nothing at all. Ten minutes later, once out of the lee of the land, we had a solid F5 NE.

Having been away for the last month to North Brittany and the Channel Islands from Burnham I have found the Met office most reliable. Left Fecamp on Friday for Eastbourne having only seen the Meteo forecast which said NNE 4. Half way across the Channel wind built to 6 then 7 with gusts of 8. Very rough and although shaken and stirred got across safely.

The Burnham weather station is definitely not one to rely on having sailed out of Burnham for a number of years.

just opened both the live weather page at Burnham YAcht Harbour and Burnham Weather Station. Much the same for the wind reading. MAybe we need a new beaufort scale?

1= Not enough
2= Just right
3 = Too much

Just about sums up this season so far and 2 is by far and away the least likely

There was a song by Bob Roberts, skipper of Cambria, about a reluctant sailor.

"Now my dad was a fisherman bold
And he lived till he grew old
For he'd open the pane and pop out the flame
Just to see how the wind do blow. "

If the candle blew out it was too windy.
If it stayed alight it was too calm.

Currently showing strong wind warnings for your area and not looking good for the weekend at all, don't forget to let us know how accurate it is when you go out on Saturday, afternoon seems to be very windy, leave off the beans and it might help.

Weather Forecasts PAH !!!!! The only thing I think you can rely on is that the wind will almost certainly be coming from where you are going to, at a speed that is either too much or too little.
