My new (to me) boat has history. She was stolen from her mooring in Mylor, Falmouth, on the evening of 13th July, 2008, and taken to Brest. She was subsequently located and returned to Mylor on 11th November that year.

I'm trying to establish what the weather was like that night, and the subsequent 30 hours. It's a long way for a 24' boat, and I'm just curious I suppose.

Can anyone point me in the direction of the information? I could go to the Falmouth library and look at a newspaper of the day, but I'm 250 miles away. Hopefully there's an online resource.

The met office retain historical records of the shipping forecast (but not the inshore waters forecast). EDIT: Not accessible online though: I had to ask them nicely for it

I just checked my log. I was racing at Cork that week and I list the wind strength as F2-5 for the week. I think the 13th we were just sorting out the boat with the odd test sail and there was very little wind. From my recollection of the courses, winds were mainly W or SW during the week.

It's not Falmouth or Brest, but I 'm guessing there wasn't a gale down there.

I have a Davis weather station on my roof which logged the following on the afternoon in question. Wind speed 5kts gusting to 10kts and briefly 15kts. Air temps of 15C rising to 21C in the afternoon. Wind W veering E after the 15kt gusts. 70% RH with 1017 on the barometer. I'll chart it later if I have the time and post a graph. All in all, quite a nice day by all accounts.

Having sailed a Cornish Yawl for three years, I would have no qualms taking one that far. They're good little sea-boats, and sitting in the water rather than on it makes for a sea-kindly motion.

The limiting factor for me would be time off work, as any 24 footer will take a while to travel long distance, and a relatively shallow-draught gaffer will especially suffer against contrary winds.

Late June 2008 weather at Sark

This gives an indication of the weather for late June and early July for 2008. This is the Westerly rally at anchor at Sark, awaiting a fair tide to the Minkies and Jersey.

We had 5 weeks of excellent weather when most of the boats had to motor as there was very little wind. Of the 5 weeks we only had one bad week that kept us in St.Helier.

We returned to Falmouth during the third week of July - motoring!!
