Hi Everyone, I am hoping someone can give us some info on what oil to use on the engine service for D13 900 HP engines.
I know key part specify VDS 4.5 15w/40 but in Spain I can only seam to buy a standard 15w/40 oil with no VDS rating?
Does this make a difference and should we be buying Elf or Cespa or any other brand that might be better or does it not mater?

Also I need gearbox oils as the service guy is recommending an oil change on this and also on the generator.
Again if you know what oil is used for the gear boxes and the generator that would be helpful?

I ask because I get my service parts from Keypart sent over but they don't transport oil?

Hi,

If you have a requirement of VDS4.5 then it is not recommended to use another, your machine is so new and heavy duty bulk oil is not good. Try to find an oil heavy duty vehicle shop for movement, a number of oil brands that meet the class VDS4.5. Gear oil hard to say, you need to tell the model that you have the same generator.

Here is an example of VDS4.5 oil

You could try a yard .
Ours has a shop with a high turn over of consumables .
They do Total Rubia and Fina Kappa @ 15/40 W , which on the back is sticker with the various codes like “VDS xyz “ or what ever .
For me I look for MAN 3277 . Fully synthetic. Code .
I find the std 5L container s easier to use / pour in than say buy a big drum of 35 L and have to ( usually messily) decant that into a jug to our in .
Price wise there’s little in it we need about 65 L/. 70 ish for both .
Normally the label has a long list - MAN , Volvo , Merc , Renault , Mack , etc usual suspects with there various codes .

Geny is any 15/40 w so we use some of that - tiny 1.1 L and it’s chaged every year along with the mains .

Gearbox is NOT a muligrade it’s a twin disc —- either straight 30 W for low temps start or 40 W .
Multigrade is said to froth and airate .
Agian our yard sells it by the L , they have massive barrels and just fill a spare container ,from memory just under or over 5 L each ?

So can I ask where you are looking , picking up container s that say not much at the back .?

Normally I pay €25/27 for 5 L can,t remember if that with or without tax , think without tbo .
Around €350

D13, a relatively new model, when was it registered, is it under a five year extended warranty?

On a new engine I would go for Volvo Penta's own engine oil and coolant and to save a bit you can get oil or coolant in 205litre drums as well as cans.

That way fully accepted lube and coolant spec in case of a problem especially under warranty.

Hi,

VP D13 in new generation engine, based on SCR exhaust aftertreatment technology. The exhaust aftertreatment technology chosen by Volvo Penta is Selective Catalytic Reduction, SCR, which ensures high engine power and efficiency while reducing NOx.

Therefore, oil should also meet the latest classification eg ash residue if you choose an older oil quality you can get an additional bill to repair the exhaust system so the oil must be VDS 4.5 or API-CK4 classified!

You will definitely have your boat manual, you can find there an accurate classification for oils as the main engine, gear and generator, it is important to use the correct lubricant fluid in the right place and avoid problems and extra money to repair the damage.

Ahmm - all agreed .
Point is the spec codes are on the reverse side of the container.
Exon and Moblie Delvac do a VDS 4.5 .
Of course VP do there own in a “ blue “ container .
I used MAN to illustrate the code labels as they don,t actually do there own packaged oil .Instead they just apporove and list in the service book many proprietary brands with the relevant codes and as long as it meets that spec it’s OK .

Volvo do the same .
Anyhow the issue ( if I understand the OP. S problem?) is availablilty !
He can,t source VDS 4.5 thus far .
He knows he should use it just can,t get it - on the island .
There gotta be some on the island and the first place I would look is a VP approved service yard .
I,can’t imagine a isle in a Spanish supermarket or convenience store having a dedicated VP section :)

Here’s an equivalent French one ( yard ( on the Cote d Azur as an illustration of the type of outlet .

Just to be clear my advice is use the correct spec .

I am on the mainland in Spain near Alicante and will try a Truck place if I can find one, I have just been quoted 11.22 euros a later which sounds alot?

there is an official volvo parts dealer in Rojales bit further south than Alicante, APS motor. They will have the right oil or will be able to get it. I think they have a sales office in Alicante Marina near the Marina offices.
I use them for official bits, www.apsmotor.es. Just of the AP7 motorway. I usually email them a shopping list then when they reply, usually same/next day go and pick the stuff up

Yes, I've used the Alicante Marina one. Helpful chap who speaks a little English. He will get stuff to the marina next day if he has it in the wharehouse.
