Should I use to replace my reefing line on the genoa roller drum? Would standard Marlowbraid be suitable or is there any advantage to using something like Dyneema. We cruise ..don't race .
You will not be involved in stretch problems- so find a rope which is comfortable to handle at the lowest price- probably a braid to discourage kinking but it isn't essential
The braid rope supplied is usually of a very hard construction to avoid binding up on the drum.
Its worth taking a lot of care with the end that is locked in the drum.
I always worries me that the stronger the wind, and the more you reef, the fewer turns there are on the drum and the more you depend on the integrity of the rope end clamp.

A braid but not a soft 'floppy' type which encourages riding turns on the drum. Bill.
We had a braid with the core removed from the forward half. This allowed room on the drum and was pleasant to handle at the back end. That was on a Hood roller which couldn't quite contain the required length of "complete" rope on the drum. ~If I had a huge genny now, I would consider an endless pulley system, or if there is already a drum, a wire/braid combination as large loads are possible. .
The advantage of dyneema for this is that you can use a smaller diameter/stronger rope & get it to fit on the drum comfortably if you need to - nothing to do with stretch - otherwise use braid

Yes, I've had the Hood Seafurl system for twenty years with the same (removed core) line. It's still in perfect condition and, as you say, allows the normal braid to be handled while the sheathing section furls onto the drum.
It's an excellent system IMO. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
