What type of coax connector is this?

Lw395 - can you suggest a couple of places to get decent pl259’s?

I have an SMA to SO259 adaptor - so I can use my backup handheld (if i have a vhf failure) and plug it into my 8 foot aerial. No idea if it will work, but worth a punt I thought.

Look for amateur radio shops, it's been a long time and the only one I remeber is Martin Lynch IIRC in north London but th re are many others.

I got some through the trade from Radiall, but I think they are comically expensive.
As they have to be the right size for whatever cable you have, it's usually easier to get a respectable brand of BNC clamp plug and an adaptor.
The BNC is also easier to thread though holes in bulkheads etc.

I would go careful hanging a heavy stiff cable from the SMA socket of the handheld, SMA connectors are not very strong. A short lead adapting from SMA to whatever might be less stress on the socket.

It’s only for an emergency!

Fair comment but you don't want to turn an emergency into a shambles by breaking your backup radio.
I've worked in the industry and seen too many broken SMAs in my time. On my first yacht a footlong adaptor lead allowed the H/H VHF to be used with the mast head antenna much more easily.
