What type of boat (dinghy) is this

I bought this as a national 12 but there is some debate as to wether or not it might be a tideway, its 12 ft, clinker built and has a gaf rig. What do people think?? Also what is the best stuff to use to fill in small cracks and splits in the wood.

That's a very pretty little dinghy. I can't comment about the class or design, but I'd like to comment about the splits and cracks. Do they occur at random, or are they all in similar situations? Cracks can be symptomatic of stresses in the boat, and sometimes they need a profound solution, not window-dressing. Can you give us more details?

Looks very similar to our old Twinkle 12 - including the metal centreplate. Some of the detailing though is slightly different to our (Walker) one. Blue sails ?

Aint no national 12, but these will plane with a stiff breeze. Put 2 seagulls on the back & you have a nice classic wooden twin screw motor yacht too.

Thanks for the complimentary comments, this is fast becoming a pride and joy. There are only two significant cracks 1 in the transom which looks as though it had been filled previously but he "filler" has dried out or crumbled or something. The other is in the centreboard casing this is a small split no wider than a finger nail, but when i droppped it in the water it was wide enough to allow a decent flow through.

Any thoughts on how to rectify these would be most welcome.

Thing is about Nat 12 was that they were (are) development class so although many look the same, many look very different...bit like Merlin Rockets.

They had to conform to certain measurements, length beam mast and sail areas etc.


Looks very nice and I think there are some active classic dinghy racing events now?

You need to let splines into the cracks, or fill with epoxy, splines better. If you dont know what I'm talking about, then best get somebody qualified to do it for you, lovely looking dinghy! I'm jealous.

Thing with dinghies like this is that the centreboard cases rot from the inside out, so although the case may look ok apart from the split on the outside, it may be rotten as hell on the inside. Therefore the split might just be the symptom of something more substantial. Not too scary to re-do but a job none the less.

Like the shape. Not sure what it is myself. I'd have a look on the Classic and Vintage Dinghy Racing Association website if I were you as they have quite a gallery of various well known classes. They also have a forum that might be of use.

I did wonder about the centreboard casing, I had actually thought about making a new one, but only had that thought for about 20 seconds, then decided to wait untill I was a bit more "experianced".

I will have a look at the forum on cvrd, may get some info there.
