I am replacing the starter battery for the 12 hp diesel motor in my boat and have been advised to use an Exide "enhanced flooded battery". I have been using the Exide "silver calcium battery" up to now. Could anyone please advise what the difference is and which would be the most suitable.

If it is solely for engine start then a basic battery such as that recommended for small diesel cars will be more than adequate. They are usually around 70AH capacity and have a high CCA (cranking amps). choose one that fits your space and has the right terminals.

Unless you have a smart alternator as fitted to modern cars, there's no need for silver calcium.

Agree with the above.

The starter battery has an easy life, so you don't need anything fancy. When I re-engined, 12 years ago, my starter battery was second hand, having had a hard life in an ambulance. I replaced it last year.
