what to do in 60kn wind... rather urgent pls

Nice to get the feedback. One for the logbook of life! You didn't mention the kids! Well done for getting them involved, keeping busy is better than being an uninformed bystander! A hot drink when you are cold and perhaps a little scared goes straight to the 'morale' nerve!

As you say at some point it's all the engine can do to keep the boats head to wind.

BTW. Scotch whiskey and 4-7 year olds is a tad risky, but then so's coffee!

Croatian weather forcast

In Summer, the VHF weather is transmitted every couple of hours first in English then Croatian. However it is a bit like the boy who called wolf. When I was there in May they predicted nearly every day NE gusts of 30 to 40 knots in the Velibit chanel which is not far from Molat. I find the DWD on my WeatherMan much more reliable.

You've probably considered this already but....
If you're in the lee of the land now and you put two anchors down, just be wary of a sudden wind shift and finding your self anchored off a lee shore. Be prepared to weigh your main and perhaps let the second anchor run, unless you're mob handed and can get them both aboard in good time. You may need to move in a bit of a hurry to find a new lee. Good luck, I hope the wind stays where it is for you. :)

If its a Bora, its tumbling down from the mountains - katabatic, so likely to keep same direction, not like a low pressure system backing/veering as we get in UK

Quote.." If you're in the lee of an island it's OK because one thing you don't get is a wind shift and the wave action should be mitigated."

Quote..Wind then turned which exposed us but made Molat harbour more protected."

And the next please...

What struck first was a thunderstorm which may well have been covered by emergency radio forecasts but we assumed those related to the later Bora. With the noise, we just listened for the area and wind range in whatever language they used. Either way, that explains the changing wind direction. We assumed it was the Bora that started as it started as rapidly as we were told the Bora would arrive.

Tomahawk - we were on VHF ch69 to keep in touch with two other boats in our group; seems emergency broadcasts are made there too.
