What speed would you say this boat was doing?

Heading upstream to Kingston, here comes Turks. What speed would you estimate that New Southern Belle is doing on the non tidal(5mph limit)Thames?

For the next 'guess the speed' comp., I'll be posting footage of Connaught (if I'm quick enough to catch her)

drat ! Beatento it.

With a length of 82ft OA, she takes 7.09 seconds to pass a transit point.

That is 11.56 feet per second, and that comes out at

6.85 knots or 13Km/hr.

Nee Naw ! Excuse me, Sir, are you the Master of this vessel....

Hardly a brisk walking speed. And going upstream with no wind so no need reason for steerage to be compromised by sticking to the limit.

That's 6.85 knots over the ground. Whats the river speed ?.

I must admit to being impressed by the (relative) lack of wash, but a big boat like that has an awful lot of Newton seconds in it.

I maintain it's the speed which is the problem, as well as the wash.

If a rowing eight goes past my boat at full whack, with little surface disturbance let alone a wave, we have to hold the glasses down. The boat is an old type of wooden motor cruiser heavily ballasted to use the steadying sails. Crucially it's round bilge in shape, and rolls like mad when an eight goes past. A small hard chine boat won't move anywhere as near as much. The point being it's about under water pressure. If i moor at Fawley Meadow this weekend - not sure if there's any restriction/price hike - I'll try and video. The point about a surge is also important - little wash but a heavy boat moving at speed like the old Mapledurham could pull pins out on a narrow stretch.

I would guess the speed of the NSB about 7-8 knots.

I wasn't planning on complaining about this boat, but there are times when it comes a lot closer than that and it really does bash me about. I have my camera ready, as I'm working on the boat getting ready for a cruise and intend to catch Connaught, Cockney Sparrow, Hurley or Merrie Thames. The only passenger boats down this was that show any consideration are The Kingston and Richmond Royale. I don't know why the others can't.

Shame that the Maple was cut up :(

Such a majestic boat even if she did pull the pins out occasionally. I'd rather see a beautiful boat like that passing at speed and tie myself up properly than see them leave the River.

No I meant the Mapledurham the late Salters steamer as mentioned by IanC, sorry to confuse. . i agree the Turks boat you originally mentioned is terrible.
