What sort of loads do I need to allow for on a Furling Line?

You can use a bigger line to make it easier on the hands by removing the centre section of the length of rope that goes round the furling drum leaving the bit you handle at its original size.I have this set up on my boat so I have 8mm line at the handling end. Some chandlers sell rope like this e.g.Jimmy Green sells lengths already tapered. With some ropes it is easier to remove the outside cover leaving the inner as the thinner bit.

Perhaps a side issue, but many boats use 8 or 10mm for comfort when handling, but strip the core out of the rope for the bit that winds on the drum (allowing more room on the drum). Still plenty strong enough like this.

I used an ordinary cam type cleat on my Maxi 77 and had no problems at all. My Moody 36 on the other hand has much larger line and a winch, but the sail is a hell of a lot bigger
