I was just about to buy a good mummy bag from our local outdoor firm when one of the assistants (built a bit like me, cuddly, well she was!) said "Have you tried it on?". I hadn't, so did, to find myself pinioned in the straitest jacket I've ever worn. I asked her what she suggested; her next question was "How big is your tent?". After explaining that my tent was a quarter berth, and then explaining what a quarter berth was, she suggested buying two of the wider rectangular bags. If it's warm I link them together as a double to get plenty of room; if it's cold one goes inside the other (with the zips on opposite sides) to get extra warmth. Mind you, last week we had ice on the deck but I was still using them linked as a double.

I see Compass show fleece sleeping bags, zipped. Sounds like a good way to go and I plan them next time. Has anyone had any problems with them ?

Peter, as a man of roughly the same shape (but a bit taller) you've been swizzed. The cheapest Tesco duvet with some sort of undersheet will keep you as comfortable as possible. Good sailing

Tritonofnor has it right, the Coleman Chestnut is just wonderful - I've slept in them even when the condensation on the inside of the cabin is freezing, and always toasty warm. They are HUGE too, ideal for the larger chap (though I'm on the skinny side myself). Cannot recommend them highly enough. One of the best buys ever for the boat.

I've checked with a professional sleeper out who sold me a copy of Big Issue.
He recomends several layers of Financial Times inside a large cardboard box [from the back of Tesco's]. For added comfort cuddle a large mongrel.

Well built?!?!!

Tend to agree with your solution only I use a sleeping bag not done up + a fleece blanket, about 7' square which I can then fold in 2 if really cold. I sleep aboard all year round and never get cold using this system.

Decent pillows are essential for a good nights sleep, or alternatively about 10 pints of Butcombe..............................
