Recommedation please

I have a Hanse 31 ( 4,700Kg all up) with a Lewmar windless on 30 m of 8mm chain. I would like to add another 30m of multiplat - just in case What size of Multiplat should I use 12mm or 14mm ?

Many thanks

Windlass manufacturers usually recommend 3 strand rather than multiplait. 14mm should be good, usually a decent match for 8mm chain.

One rule of thumb is that ideally, the breaking load of the rope part of the rode should match that of the chain (there's no point in having rope stronger than the chain and vice versa).

Jimmy Green quotes a break load of about 4 tonnes on their Grade 40 galvanised 8mm chain.
Jimmy Green quote breaking loads for polyester octoplait of 2.4 tonnes for 12mm, 3.8 tonnes for 14mm and 4.7 tonnes for 16mm
If you prefer nylon octoplait (nice & stretchy), the figures are 3.3 tonnes for 12mm, 4.4 tonnes for 14mm

So it looks to me as though 14mm would give the best match of breaking load to your chain.

But as another regular poster likes to point out, you never hear of chain actually breaking, so you'd probably find the 12mm wouldn't be a problem.. Perhaps a better approach would be to think about which would be easier to handle, or which would splice to the chain more easily (assuming that's how you'll join them).

As for the 3-strand/octoplait question. I'm a great fan of 3 strand for many purposes, but for an anchor rode I love the ability of octoplait to flake down easily without fuss.

If the windlass gypsy is like mine, ie chain and rope, 12mm won’t grip. 14mm does, just, and 16mm is perfect but not an ideal splice to 8mm chain.
