Hi All - Sang the first line of "What shall we do with the drunken sailor" to my kids, who thought it hilarious. They are most interested in the rest of the song, but I don't know it (Stick him up the mast till he's sober, then something about throwing him on the bridge??) - Can you help. Thanks

I have a book, "Sea Songs and Shanties" collected by Captain W B Whall and originally published in 1910 although mine is the sixth edition, published 1n 1927 and reprinted in 1986. Incidentally, the 1910 Preface starts "These songs have appeared in the Nautical Magazine and Yachting Monthly."

It includes "What shall we do with the drunken sailor" under the title "Early in the morning". But it is quite specific in saying that there were only two verses:

What shall we do with the drunken sailor?
Put him in the long boat and make him bail her.

and

What shall we do with the drunken soldier
Put him in the guardroom till he gets sober.

The book says that generally shanties were not allowed in "the Royal Service" (which also covered craft such as revenue cutters) but that this song and one other (Cheer'ly Man) were sometimes allowed. Both songs were used the ships of the East India Company.

Mind you, I reckon that the long list of verses given by Anthony sound like much more fun.

I seem to remember Rolling Sid Rumpo alias Kenneth Williams did a version of this on the 'Round The Horn' radio show on Sundays.
It went something like
