What shall I take with me? I have been asked to skipper a charter yacht for a week.

Take a camera (ideally with a video function) and take a lot of pictures when you do the initial handover. As skipper your name is likely to be on the paperwork and if they charter company starts suggesting your trip caused the damage you'll be wanting those photos!

Navionics on your phone - and if go for HD make sure you download the relevant areas before you leave
Odd bits of string / rope - amazing what can be done with a lash up !
Swiss army knife with bottle opener

Sorted

Forget the paper charts as should be on board - and Navionics better for backup and route planning at the bar

Now that is a really good idea!

Having done several flotillas all I take is leatherman, Swiss army knife, bit of thin Kevlar string, mozzie repellent, sun cream, electrical tape.
All the sailing stuff has been on board but it might be easier and quicker to do minor bodge than ask for help.
We are talking about skipper of the charter boat not flotilla leader.
Suppose ear plugs might help if sailing with unknowns, mayber for the crew if sunshine gets swimbo enthused.

I have found that binoculars on most boats are pretty useless (at least, compared to mine), so if you have a nice pair may be a good idea to take them. I can't imagine a Greek flotilla yacht having even half decent ones.

Being a flotilla, I shouldn't think the sailing will be too adventurous or arduous, or that you will go too far off the beaten track - in fact, the yacht could probably find its own way to most places.....

A packet of Twinings afternoon tea. If the charter company is any good it will include a radio and all the charts and pilot books you will need.

Surely the OP was not asking what UK speciality you would miss and therefore take with you (as it might be, Marmite)? Everyone has to decide how far to go native or pack their own moral support...

Mike.

Be sure to take your brain. The crews on the flotilla boats will be in holiday mood (which generally means leaving their brains at home). Whilst you will of course join in the fun you need to remember you're a skipper at all times. In Greece a skipper (captain) is legally responsible for the safety of all on board.

Also be aware that under Greek Law is if someone on board is injured (and this is especially so if a Pan Pan or Mayday call is made) the port police have a legal duty to pass on all details to the public prosecutor to decide if the captain has been negligent and should be prosecuted. All Greeks know that they need to be careful what is said when a call for help is made to avoid this.

Perhaps but mjcoon's suggestion remains one of the best I've seen yet. 10 years sailing in the Ionian and I wouldn't consider any of the suggestions necessary enough to make a point of taking in that without them you couldn't take the boat out.

Now you mention it, the tea bags are an essential but so is a couple of decent mugs. The ones on charter boats are usually rubbish.
