Hi All, generally I rely on the secondhand shops for sailing ware but with the demise of my North Sail jacket thought I might ask the family for a new one. (Boat bits are generally band as items for presents but this might be acceptable…. But what sort of North Sails jacket is it? Or what is the equivalent current garment. Not in a position to have a look in the chandlers. Other recommendations accepted.
Thanks.

It looks a bit like a musto snug jacket.

Take your pick as to which one. Your photo doesnt give enough detail due to the size.
FW25 Men Collection

They certainly cost enough !
Thanks Boathook, yes that is a pretty poor pic!! It is a North Sails jacket….. your link looks good though, ouch £230!!! Might have to keep my eye open at the secondhand shop!! Anyone cheaper recommendations? Not young enough to be bothered that everyone knows how much I have spent on a clothing item….. (I have teenage daughters…).

If you think £230 is a lot (and it is) you should see what their top spec stuff costs these days. In to four figures!

For cheaper end of spectrum, Decathlon (Tribord) sailing gear is good value.

That looks just the ticket, thank you.

The Maindeck is a copy of the Musto item but I think it's better. I have had loads of Musto watch coats and rarely sail with any other. I generally use them for best shore use, then on the boat for several seasons, when they get rough it's anti fouling and eventually for gardening.
The material tends to fade over the seasons and I find the zips tend to get tricky - however I have had a Maindeck version which is very waterproof, the material is still bright after 5 years, it's pretty waterproof and the zips have stood us very well.

Both have one serious flaw, the inside pocket is shallow and attached to the body of the coat, it's a natural place to put a mobile phone or wallet. If you do this and forget to close the zip and then bend down, all the contents without question be ejected directly out. This will probably be directly into the water or, if you are lucky, only cause phone damage. I have done this several times and have one phone at the bottom of the river Tamar.
Before using my present new coat I will be cutting out the pocket and fitting a deeper one not attached to the body of the lining - like Musto used to fit originally. 👍
