It used to be a Naval officer, bicycle and ladder but many boats put all three to good use. As I unpacked after a two week cruise I thought what do I usually take but never use?: a selection of ties ( neck not sail) for invites to posh yacht clubs that never happen, jumpers and fleeces in case it`s cold in this era of global warming, tinned chunky chicken in case we want to eat on board ( that never gets eaten from one season to next), socks, board games where we have lost the rules......and what would I ban from the boat: Harry Potter books so I get some attention from the crew, sesame seed buns and any crew with a longer that number three haircut so I don`t spend all holiday sweeping up the seeds/hairs etc !!!!

An engine that can't be started without batteries.
A day by day schedule
Battery operated Lettuce Spinner
Any of those all-in-one ''Must have'' toolgadget thingys that I have bought at every boatshow!

I had specialy made and carried a plank, for years, after experiencing Irish harbours.. Where was I a couple of weeks ago. Poole quay, the only place I've been in years that I needed it, besides the on provided. Just shows, you dont need it till you do!!

the owner of the (aluminium) boat i work on has a full set of masonry drills on board. Maybe he's saving them for when an old ferro boat anchors too close?

I used to add an umbrella to that list, but I did use one once when being rowed ashore in an unflatable (Gosh! That was a Freudian slip). We had a mate on Hoshi once who brought his bike with him and somewhere I have a photo of him going for a bike ride along the side deck. He really brought it along so that he could visit the girl friend in every port.
So, I will add one of those BBQ things you attach to the aft rail.

An alcoholic. A real alcoholic isn't even fun like a piss artist.

The catatonic. I've had several crewmembers sleep right through cruises. (see it's not just Jimi)

Vegi

Bloody lettuce

Mini

My heavy weather anchor. It's an oversized, for the boat, plough. It's a weightlifting puzzle to get it out of the locker, a sod to deploy and it doesn't hold, in most sea beds, as well as the kedge. If it does hold it's more weightlifting to get the sod broke out again.

Oh! A bottle of dutch gin. Even the alcoholic won't drink it.

Actually I was using a spirit level last week - I fitted a pipe cot for my smaller son and I wanted it level - with the boat afloat a spirit level ensured this!
