I'm just about to buy the antifouling for my Colvic Countess 33 bilge keel, never having antifouled her before could anyone give me an idea of quantity per coat I would need. I'm going to use a soft antifoul. Would I get away with just one coat when some manufactures recommend 2 for the first application? Thanks

depends on antifoul type, usually specified on the tin, recently used blakes tiger which although is a hard antifoul is supposed to cover approx 33m2 per 2.5l tin, designed to cover with one coat and it did.

I have a Countess 28 with twin keels , I buy 5 litres and that gives me 2 good coats , guessing that another tin would do your C33 so about 7.5 litres ...

+1 my 33 foot Neptunian could just about be done with 5 litres for 2 coats but perhaps dip into a third can for starting from scratch.
Do we understand that the hull has been stripped of all antifoul? will you use a primer?

Hi Dave220.....I have literally just done the antifouling on my Countess 33 bilge keel. used the tail end of a tin I found on the boat, then 2 x 2.5 litre tins of Hempel Cruiser to do two coats. There is still some left, so I reckon the two tins would do it. I didn't prime but scraped back old loose antifouling and painted over that.

That's good to hear. I don't AF mine, as I moor on a river.
I once did some calcs and reckoned the hull area was 33 sq mtrs which would need 8 ltrs of AF, looks like I over estimated!

I'm actually moored currently in Cardiff Bay, which is basically freshwater, but prone to accumulating green slime......some folks are not bothering to AF....

5 litres certainly did it for me.....applied with small rollers by the way

I just bought a countess 33 deck house bilge keel in Germany. I'm from holland and I want to go sailing roaming the UK in my retired years. could be any moment now. I.M.H.O. modern AF's don't pay off. There good for the environment but don't do the job. One of the advantages of bilge keels is that we can do some hullcleaning while dryed out on sand. As the matter of facts i used udder ointment as a natural AF on my last boat (als 33 ft) and haven't af'd in five years!!
By the way, can you help me with some advices on this lovely boattype? Do you have an innersteering and do you use it frequently?
Any tips about maintenance or sailing (ours is sloop rigged although I would have liked a mizzen as well for some extra posibilities in sailing tactics.
But with pre-loved boats Really the case here) one has to take things for granted I suppose.

Montymariner (who used to be Ladyinbed) on here still has one. I expect he will be along soon.

You are aware that you will be limited in how long you can keep the boat in the UK if you are an EU resident, and if you are a UK resident you will have to import it and pay VAT.
