Hi, I'm looking for some advice regarding what length of outboard engine shaft I need for a 14' 6 Norwegian style fibreglass dinghy. The transom height is 21" so I'm hoping that a long shaft outboard should be fine however, unlike a planning boat of this size the keel protrudes another 7 or 8" below the base of the transom. My concern is that I might need an extra long shaft outboard? Would be grateful to hear people's thoughts thanks.

Measure from the top of the transom, or mounting bracket to the water level. If that is no more than 20 " a long shaft engine should be fine.

It is often advisable to go one size longer on a small yacht in order to keep the prop in the water when the boat pitches.
