Looking through the options list for a new boat and being a noob to coastal use I am wondering exactly what I need and what I don't.

The boat will be used around Solent, Channel, South West England and a bit of cross channel work and will be used all year round though only 2 or 3 nights out at a time. At the moment I favour a Botnia Targa and think I need:

1. Nav stuff - decent chartplotter and radar, VHF, fishfinder all doubled up to flybridge and a bow thruster.

2. Comfort - heating, hot water, cooker, fridge and shore power connection.

Things I'm not sure about:

Do I need:

1. Generator?

2. Toilet Holding tank?

3. Trim tab indicators?

4. Electric anchor kit (£3k!)?

5. Microcommander electric engine control (£5.2k!)?

6. Lots of teak everywhere?

Anything else I will regret if I don't order it?

Cheers!

dont need 1 2 & 5 on second list IMHO

oh and a Botnia Targa?....... a bit dull/odd looking but you do get a free stigma with each model/forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Just done an order for our new boat, The holding tank is useful if you intend to use the toilets in the marina, the trim tab indicators should come as standard? Teak is good and the flybrifges I have been on iwthout them tend to be slippery if wet.

Generator only is you intend lots of days and nights spent at anchor and the wife/gf need to dry her hair.. 2nd Fridge is always useful, leather is best if not standard for saloon, if covers not included (Flybridge) good investment and they pay for themselfs in time not having to clean flybridge.

2nd VHF on flybridge and I would strongly recomend chartplotter repeater on flybridge, after an experiance I had in fog returning from the Channel Isles.

Hope that helps.

Yep, made a note of engine spares - will go on engine maintenance course as well.

Glad about 1 2 & 5 - don't even know what 5 is! :)

Hehe. Yes the Targa is for those who like a superb hull, ability to handle bad weather and have nothing to prove in the marina. . . . . . . ;-)

Dinghy is most specially needed When hooked up tp buoy. Water taxi is. Asleep/ to dear/ unavaiable/ Finnished/ not started yet/ or unavailable cos droped anchor at nearest pub and forgot to tell them beforehand. To get one. Course they might well have given egg on face and shit. Cos how you fit a P35in here.!! ...../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

1,2,4,5,6 - don't need any of them. I would have a tab indicator in order to confirm what position they are in.
Definitely need a small dinghy - bound to fit somewhere. You could launch it with the upgraded mast and boom.
I'd also have a back-up compass at the upper helm position as well as the electronic repeaters.
Targas have heating as standard but this may be more for demisting purposes rather than heating up the accommodation.
I'm envious.

Have em all you can't go wrong.
