this forum used to be interesting and informative and sometimes witty. it appears now to have become a haven for cliques, racists and other inappropriate attitudes.
it needs taking back. until then i am off. good riddance to me i suppose.

with the grand total of 15 posts between the pair of you whingers, I can't see how you can possibly criticise..

If you're not happy then continue to do what you've been doing and don't say a word.

It is what you make of it

Without stating the obvious, this forum is exactly what ALL users make of it, yourself included.

Your racism comment relates, I presume, to one thread earlier last week. I left it to see where it was going in terms of sensible comment although it has now gone. We do not tolerate or support racism on any of our forums and this forum is certainly not a haven for racists.

Similarly we would never tolerate a few users making it impossible for others to post, which would be a true clique.

So, in short, I hope you stick with us and contribute to ensure that Scuttlebutt offers as broader scope as possible.

You must feel that you are on the outside looking in - judging by your comment on cliques. It is a shame that you feel that way because in reality I don't think anyone is excluded or cold shouldered when joining in a thread, whether the remarks made be constructive or a devious attempt to hijack!
As with all conversations - real or virtual - there are some subjects that interest and some that don't - and so we all have an option to participate or refrain. I'm not sure that one can really substantiate remarks which open with 'this forum used to be...' It's direction and content is of course entirely at the will of its contributors -which obviously means that you or I or any of us has the ability to influence that. Simply saying that you don't like what is being said so you are off, is a bit of an opt out really, don't you think? It would seem apparent that you do want to participate in the forum, otherwise I cannot think why you would have started the thread. The reference to a potentially racist remark is dealt with in Kims response, but just to support what he said, any post that is deemed offensive is normally given fairly short shrift by forum users and of course Kim has and uses when necessary and appropriate, the power of deletion.

I'm a relatively new user, and I have always enjoyed the forum.
It reminds me of a good pub conversation. Sometimes funny, some times silly, some times a bit of a clique, nearly always good humoured but with occasional arguments, and above all, informative if you talk to the right individual.

What would you like to know?

Just ask. I'm sure someone will be able to give you a rational answer, without cliques, racism or bad attitudes.

We're a friendly lot really, as a whole bunch seemed determined to prove last weekend.

Whilst I don't agree with the original post by 'Dinjy' I am a newcomer to this site and I did find the reaction of 'craigbalsillie' to be somewat abrupt and discortious and not the words of a gentleman (or lady).
Does one have to have a certain number of posts before his/her opinion is valid as seems to be suggested by him? (That is a rhetorical question and I know that the very firm answer is a resounding 'NO' from others who might be more regular posters. (is that the correct noun ?)

The number of posts is indeed irrelevant in most instances. But making one post a week for a few weeks and then making observations that the site is racist or cliquey seems a little like announcing that you are leaving a dinner party after five minutes cos it is rather boring and the people are dull. I mean, we haven't even had the chance to have a row with them yet!

oh yes, "posters" is fine. Or "contributors".

Dinjy's post is similar to several that have appeared from time to time. Craigs response was I think, understandable - whether or not you agreed with its sentiments. The valid point he did make was that if Dinjy is not happy with the forum he/she has two options - as have we all. Contribute and make a difference or don't, but you cannot really complain when you don't do anything to introduce new or develop existing posts

'Nodders' own post in the 'Big Warship Part 2' thread hardly added to the store of human knowledge ! He posted the kind of trivia that he's complaining about.

For my part, in the last few months on these forums (fora?!) I've sold a spotlight; bought a liferaft; sold an inflatable;got advice on the coax needed for an Inmarsat C set; had 'VMG to windward' explained; got advice on VAT on old boats; got help on flying a cruising chute etc etc. - so no complaints from me!

I saw a blue and yellow burgee flown over a toaster, hung from a generator, while the dinghy tried to inflate itself behind the stern of a 20' motorboat hovering 5' above the nearest water. The 1st mate was trying to take control of the helm

What was it trying to signal? Mutiny?

Just interested

I didn't mean to be discourteous or abrupt. The point I was making was, as has already been stated, this forum and what occurs within it is down to the people who contribute and the two people in question haven't contributed a great deal so I was questioning the legitimacy of their complaint. I am a newcomer to this site as well and indeed a newcomer to sailing and I have gained an immense amount from this forum and the PBO one..
