What oil for Volvo MD1?

Thanks for all your input. Although it has left me confused and not really understanding what I need.

Can someone give me a yay on nay for this? It is Halfords 15W40 mineral oil for diesels. 15W is halfway between the 10 and 20!

Thanks again!

Your manual does not specify multigrade and I am not sure if any of the people on this thread who are telling you to use it actually have any experience running a 40+ Year old Volvo MD engine on multigrade.

The closest to what the manufacturers recommend is something like this:

Given the age of your engine you might prefer to go up to an SAE30 as I do

I would avoid an oil as heavy as a 15W40 multigrade if at all possible.

The first number (15W) referers to its characteristics at very low temperatures. It is to ensure oil is pumped and circulated when starting from cold in sub-zero temperatures. You are very unlikely to be starting your engine in these conditions.

The important number to look at is therefore the second one which defines the oil viscosity when hot. You should aim to get an oil where this corresponds to, or at least comes close to, the specified monograde oil but 5W30 may be the closest you will find.

I think I would go with Bedouin's and forelle541's suggestions to use Morris SAE20 l. If you opt for SAE30 you might just as well use a 5W30 multigrade that you can buy in the high street.

It is not quite that simple - with too low a viscosity when cold the oil pump won't prime. My engine will not run on a 15W40 multigrade for that reason. That is a particular problem as the engine gets older.

I've not searched but from memory isn't 5W30 a bit of a stretch for a mineral oil? More likely to be semi-synthetic or synthetic but not an issue if you're happy to use synthetic variants.

It will be semi or fully synthetic, my ford car is 5>30 fully synth it originally was 10>30 but ford changed the spec, emissions i guess

Thanks again for all your replies!

This is a tricky one as the oil is also used by the gearbox.

I think I may go with the Morris SAE20. This seems the safest bet after I have read the non detergent/foaming specs (Unless anyone can now tell me why I shouldn't)

Probably the best choice for now. If you encounter low oil pressure problems or a lot of rattles go to SAE 30. It is likely that multigrades did not exist when your engine was first marketed, so I suspect that a 15W-40 multigrade would be a good compromise today.
