Not enough info - [ QUOTE ]
You have planned your return for an hour before sunset, which that day is low water plus one hour, giving you 1.5m beneath the keel. But the wind has unexpectedly backed to produce an offshore Force 4 and is still picking up. The wind-against-tide is producing a nasty sea.

[/ QUOTE ]

So the tide relatively slack - low water see ... by the time lowwater + 1hr comes the tide will be going in ... unless your harbour is arse about tit then that'll be an offshore breeze then ....

See, wind blowing off land, that is the meaning of "offshore".

Tiny fetch, ergo no "waves" maybe a bit of "chop".

All worth while drinky bars are protected by notorious ruff water bars so that scruffy yachty types dont have to get in our 5-15hp dinks to help pull the 500hp mobo off.
If in doubt stay in bar, if it's too ruff for them ,it's too ruff to put my pint down.
(From SWMBO: him having said that, he's usually the first out of the bar to help....!!!!!)

Much as I've enjoyed this thread, this apparently obvious and immutable assessment of the likely conditions has puzzled me all day.

I mean the question did say a "narrow entrance with a notorious bar" not a small outdoor swimming pool with a beautifully tiled bottom*. We have to assume that, like any self-respecting notorious bar, this one may be perfectly capable of big swells, breaking waves and strong currents when there's no flippin' wind at all let alone with F4 going one way and the flood t'other.

The solution in a fast boat may well be, and often is, to run in at speed. But stage one would surely be to at least take a look at the thing beforehand...

The Bar will be choppy due to the Stinkers charging in and out on the plane.

In tricky conditions like this I would have thought the best plan is to power up to max speed 30 knts and then Zig Zag through the Yachts at close quarters, after all if they have enough water then a stinker will as long as he keeps on the plane and stays close to the Yachts, heading through a dinghy race is another way to be sure of depth of water.

Although better if you can follow your mate who has done this - as all the dinghies are now upside down - indicating that there is infact plenty of water anyway .... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

In a mobo in that situation? Easy! Put out a "Mayday"..... now the problem of getting you into harbour is squarley handed to the Coastguard and RNLI pros! Then break open another bottle of Gin whilst waiting for the helicopters, lifeboats, etc to arrive. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ah - well actually the skipper should be first in, get his/her drink, ask what the next one wants and find somewhere to sit ... leaving it to the crew to pick up the tab /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
