Wonder if anyone can identify this worktop material. I've tried several kitchen fitters and none of them can.
It really does look like black quartz Corian. Side by side it's hard to tell them apart appearance wise - black background with the same pattern of speckles.
However it isn't Corian. It's not as hard, and there is a witness line all round the edge of the panel. It's as though it has a core of some sort of plastic or maybe MDF with a veneer for want of a better word bonded on both faces, wrapped over the edges and seamed together. Overall thickness is 11mm.
It's on a Dehler so may well be a German product.
I need to replace a fridge lid made of it about 300mm square.
Thanks for any ideas.

Corian is a brand for as I understand it an acrylic based compound. They claim to be the leaders and the others just followers. That's true for price but I am not sure about the rest. So it should be possible to find a fabricator who can make acrylic products. Its very similar to grp except no fibreglass just a paste + hardener laid up in a mould. To get the sparkly effect metal bits are added to the paste. So you might be lucky and find someone to match your original piece. Here in turkey there are many backstreet workshops doing this kind of work - mostly for kitchen worktops but also for shop fitting projects. We had fantastic kitchen worktops made in this way and I am thinking when its time to refurb the galley to do the same on the boat as at home - a lot heavier than formica on plywood but much nicer to shape and have the sink incorporated into the moulding.

I used Apollo Quicktops. Easy to work and much cheaper the corian.

Just Google Apollo Quicktops.

Pictures of my galley on my blogsite (below), improvements page. Been in 3 years now and still like new.

If you do want to buy this make sure you specify you only want the top itself, otherwise it might be supplied bonded to a chipboard backing. I do have some off cuts if you find yourself near Hamble, or you are welcome to view the galley first hand.

I machined it with a conventional router and normal wood work tools. Trimming it in situ with the router left the inside of the boat looking like a snowstorm had just blown over !

Thanks that's very kind. I was in Hamble yesterday actually!

In the meantime our local kitchen showroom has quoted me for a piece of Corian machined to size for the fridge lid about 350mm square. Have a guess then scroll down.

£453.60.
Should it have been £45.36?

He seemed quite put out when I turned it down.
