What is your average speed at sea?

Hi all,

My university design project is an autonomous life saving device for recreational boaters ... its pretty awesome.

I need to work out the speed required for the device so I can buy the motors.

If you could reply with your average speed in KNOTS at sea I would be very grateful.

This forums input has been exceptional thoughout this project, I will be posting my final submission on here for all to see soon :)

Thanks

Joe

19 to 20 knots usually.

Either up to 6 knots or 20-30 knots depending on where we are and what the sea conditions are.

Anywhere inbetween is a waste if time and fuel.

Stuart, I reckon another 200rpm and 17knots would have given you far better mpg... just a thought.
Mind reader - the same thing occurred to me when I saw your figures. IIR you have slightly amended your recommendation from a year or so ago - I have 2500-2600 in my mind from then. Will certainly try the higher speed and she's is coming out next week so clean bottom will help

I may have slightly amended my figures, 2500 maybe a bit low unless glassy smooth seas, I think between 2600 and 2700 probably where we sit, and that gives around 16-17knots.

Currently 8 to 9 knots, but with my first sea boat I used to cruise at around 35 knots, and I had some speedboats on the lake that were even faster...
...In fact, I sincerely struggle to understand what an average of all these numbers can mean for an "autonomous life saving device"

Cheers Mapis, I'm just carrying out some basic research, an understanding of the average range of speeds that people usually cruise at will give me values to work out the response time required for the autonomous buoyancy. It also helps me determine the type of frequency I need to make the sonar work.
When i complete the prototype I'l chuck it back on these posts for everyone to see :)
