No - not just for Americans, it works in the UK, but you need a good view of the skyline, as the satellite is above the Atlantic somewhere. Should be good at sea, but less so in a town (for instance).

Certainly my new Garmin GPS is reporting that its getting WAAS fixes.

Re: Yes

When does the european one become operational? Not that it matters to me, 15 meters is close enough for me.

Re: Yes

EGNOS is supposed to go live in April 2004, but its currently in testing.

See <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/egnos.asp>http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/egnos.asp</A> for more information.

Re: Yes

In the Garmin blurb they make the following statement

"...How much better? Try an average of up to five times better..."

What does that mean!!!??? my limited grasp of the english language would indicate that it doesn't actually mean a thing!

BTW I really like Garmin kit and would always buy/recommend it but this looks like it was written by their marketing seudo science babble dept'

Re: Yes

If you <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.gpsinformation.net/waasgps.htm+waas&hl=en&ie=UTF-8>click here</A> and scroll down towards bottom of page, they suggest that WAAS can actually degrade the accuracy of GPS in the UK. So turn it off.

The reason is that WAAS works by ground receiver stations working out what the local error is, and bouncing that back to the satellites so they can issue local corrections. As there are currently no error correction stations in the UK, the correction information your GPS is receiving is not local at all, and is quite likely to banajax your position.

There is a fantastic site that Tome pointed out to me <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.trimble.com/gps/index.html>http://www.trimble.com/gps/index.html</A> which explains very clearly how gps and waas operate. It takes about 15mins to go through the whole thing, but it's well worth it.
