My VDO Tachometer has a tiny illumination lamp (bulb) in it that looks like this:

The pins are spaced at about 3.5mm.

Anyone know what this type of fitting is called? I could easily modify the holder with a LED, but I wondered if they were already available.

I've discovered that the generic name is a "wedge" and that the larger version is a W5W or T10.

Try boat lamps. They do a pcb base substitute.
Tip:

Chamfer the end to make it easier to insert.

I used them on some tiny fixed stern lights.

I replaced a number of those in the instrument panel of a car with the LED equivalent. The panel ran much cooler, but the LED shape meant that the light was focussed as a spot not as a flood.

I had to take the LEDs and grind away the dome to a less convex shape to spread the light more evenly.

You can certainly buy them (1.2watts IIRC) in packs of 2 from Halfrauds.

I always keep a packets as there are loads of them in my old Volvo
