What is the weight of a Jaguar 25 swing keel? I need a new winch...

As Neeves says winches are every where here in Oz due to so many trailer boats. All sizes manual and electric. For my trailer winch I have changed to dyneema 5mm from old wire. Looks puny but goes on drum nicely and only about half the drum capacity when in. Might be worth a try fro keel rope.

Dyneema also is a lot less harmful if it snaps under load.
Probably more relevant for trailering, though
Easy to over spec dyneema without it influencing the amount you can get on the drum. Dyneema is very unlikely to fail unexpectedly - you will see any wear as 'furry' rope. It is easy to replace (and if I were using it I would have spare available). If wire starts to fail it becomes a menace and is very difficult to replace, swages...?? Splicing dyneema is relatively easy (lots of You Tube Vids and advice here - just start another thread).

Dyneema does not like heat, over, say 110 deg C (cannot see that in your application) and does not like abrasion (see no reason for abrasion in your application - if you know different then cater for it - add a sleeve). Your old winch would not be a good location for dyneema, to much abrasion - but a spanking new winch without any sharp edges - which is the main focus of your thread - ideal application.

Just don't hit the beach, keel down - at speed? :)

I thought I’d update with the solution in place - tried it out yesterday and pleased to say it all seems to be working.

The last picture shows the new winch handle as supplied - this doesn’t actually work within the available space as there’s a step that needs to be lifted up and so the winch handle needs to have a crank in it. I have adapted the old handle to fit the new winch - it’s a little wobbly but works well enough.

I found a keel that swung down on a front pivot/hinge was far easier to lift over a keel that dropped vertically down where you have to haul the full deadweight back up.
Ive a hydraulic vertical lift atm Which weighs around 200 kg but its like 88 pumps to fully raise and its hard work!
Another thing i liked about the swing was that it just folds back when you sail in the shallows and find the bottom
