Does anybody know what is different between the 3.6l diesel engines used in Volvo trucks and the KAD 43 is? Marinised bits aside, are things like injectors, filters, fuel pumps etc likely to be the same?

thats something I have picked up in the last few months are Volvo's unreliable or is it just that because there are so many of them you hear about the breakdowns more ?

TBH what kills engines is lack of use. VP engines are still probably the best in the business. It is lack of maintenance that causes so many problems. The reason you here it more on VP units is a) they probably account for 70% of the market and b) there spares are expensive so there is a great temptation to cut corners - which is foolish as it will cost you (or the poor sod who has your boat next) in the long run.

The KAD43 3.6L block was never in any truck.

That's not to say that some bits aren't common, though. Like the oil filter on the KAD32, which is the same as on an old Volvo 240 car. Injectors are bog standard Bosch items etc. etc.

Trouble is, even if you can find the original manufacturer, there are variations in spec for the application that would make sourcing something like a high pressure fuel pump, for example /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif very difficult. What you need is a scrapper KAD43 with a blown block...

My Volvos were virtualy brand new when I got my boat, only had one 50hr service since new. I have had 2 injector pipes fail within hours of each other, not impressed, I personaly think most of the smaller Volvos are leisure rated and hence a bit overstressed.

Rumbled!!!!!

Actually, it's SWMBO who is a die hard fan. Deal when I bought boat number one was she got to name it /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif. She came up with Whitelighter, and I really like it - so we have taken it with us across three boats now.

I believe the 40 series engines are purpose built marine lumps and have no automotive equivalent

Correct!

41, 42/43, 44, 300 have never been found on the auotmotive side of AB Volvo, true to say the same for ya 30 series an all, ie 31 & 32.

Thats some usefull cross referencing, is there a website that does that? would quite like to be able to buy filters in halfords!

Nope, I got the Unipart numbers from Alistair and managed to get a local motor factor to look up the application. Still looking for oil filters, and if you take a set of belts to a decent motor factors they should be able to match them up.

I gave the oil filter part No from my AD41'ps to my local Volvo truck and bus dealer and he had them on the shelf, sad thing is they were £15+vat but were £15 including vat at the local swindlers.

Fuel filter from Volvo 740 2.4 litre turbodiesel, Unipart GFE5304, Halfords HFF205, Fram P4183
Air filters from Volvo 240/340 2litre diesel (B200K engine), Unipart GFE2133, Fram CA4365

The 2.4 litre engine is actually a 6 cylinder Volkswagen engine as used in the early VW LT vans and some camper vans as well as a diesel Porsch (can't remember the model). The spares are even cheaper if bought by quoting VW.
