what is the kicking strap for?

How does that work then Nigel? Using a rod kicker to assist with furling I mean. Not that I'd ever admit to having in-mast furling! But we found the gas-strut invaluable for taking the weight of the boom in light airs. It also meant we didn't need a topping lift at all.
But when you just know she's about to broach then it's kicker off to save it - worked every time. Well nearly.

In my other life as a yottie of course.

Thanks again to all. Today I sailed in a very light F1 to 1.5 and without a gib (it's gone for re-stitching) but I played with the kicking strap and noticed an improved sail shape and ability to sail up closer into the wind. Running downwind was also more relaxed. All posts appreciated and noted; thanks again. Colin.
