While I have been saving the population of S Hants from my cold, have been forced to watch TV more than usual. Saw (very) briefly the Darts World Championship. Now I always assumed that darts is a pub game. But it seems that suitably skilled peeps can earn a living from it. So you can professional pub-game players. Then got to thinking; is synchronised swimming a sport? Or a pastime? What about football, a game or a sport? And rugby, is that legalised fighting or what? Cricket, (yawn), is that, well what? Then show jumping, a pastime, a sport or a game? Cross-channel swimming, which heading does that come under? Masochism?
I could go on, but I think I might have ruffled a few feathers already. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Mind you, I could well believe that sailing is one of the higher forms of art, as well as being a sport.
What do you famous sportsmen and women think?

Sheila is having a bit of a domestic with Bruce.
‘Look you bastard, I’m pregnant, I,m going to throw myself off the bridge’
‘Cripes darling you’re not only game on but a good sport too!’

Think that explains the difference perfectly!!

Myself I would describe any activity where physical endurance classifys as a sport. So that throws out activitys like beer swilling dart players!

As for sex...could that then be a sport?........(bit like running) I get out of breath! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

A sport has been defined, I think, by the Inland Revenue (who else). There is something in the words about promoting physical wellbeing by exercise. They accept sailing is a sport.

Well it is rather like the difference between saying "She's on the game" and saying "He's a sport".

LOL......I Suppose then us men could be 'Attacking midfielders' participating in this activity!

Surely a game is played WITHIN a sport. ie, football is the sport but the match between two teams is the game.

As for sailing, if you throw all your money at a boat and win a little cup then it is a sport. If you throw all your money at a boat and get a suntan then it is a pastime. If you throw all your money at a boat and get neither then it is a lifestyle!

Difficult almost synonymous but with different nuances!

FWIW my attempted definition
Sport .. Leisure activity
Game .. a instance of leisure competition

Hence Football is a sport but a football match is a game
Ludo is a game but not a sport as little activity
Climbing & sex are a sports but not games unless there is competition involved.

So that's it then? Forumites stretch their cerebral prowess, pour out their souls, and are then patted on the head and told "Excellent imaginative responses. Well done, I am, as always, impressed! "

And then there's nothing?

Nothing!

Are the gods just playing with us?

Don't worry, it's the usual female response to the males being correct as always.

Normal reaction.

And that should get a response! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It's a sport when you enjoy something that comes naturally (like running) (yes, like that as well!).

It's a game when you have to have a lot of made-up rules in order to enjoy something that otherwise would come naturally (like football or golf).

So sail cruising is a sport, whilst racing is just another game.
