Some numbers for a Sigma 38:
In racing mode in 15 knots would be looking for 6.5 knots upwind, 7.5 knots offwind. In cruising mode with less crew and more conservative sail selection would take maybe half a knot off these boatspeeds.
Under engine will happily cruise in flat water at 6.5 knots, but rapidly goes below 6 knots in waves. Flat out can add half a knot to this but will only do this for half an hour before engine starts to overheat!
Think the hullspeed for Sigma 38 is just under 8 knots.
On a 6 month carribean circuit we averaged 6.2 knots based on GPS point to point distance in 24 hour runs. This was mainly downwind though and we motorsailed if boatspeed went much below 5 knots. Best 24 hour run was 176 miles, worse was 110 miles (beating into 30 knots).
