"What is Salcombe like these days"?

Still nice :)

I am in Salcombe right now, on the pontoon in the Bag. Like many others was pretty fed up with the rip off attitude some years ago. Happy to reort that has been changed over the last few years, staff are friendly and helpful. This year the dinghy pontoon has been extended with some finger berths added for stays up to 2 hours. The other pontoon can now be booked for overnight stays, power and water available (as are both on the dinghy pontoon). The charges are IMHO quite reasonable. We paid £21 for the night on the Bag pontoon, 15m.

So Salcombe is very much back on our cruising agenda. We also had a very good lunch today at the Yacht Club, again very reasonably priced. And there can be few more beautiful places than Salcombe, so a big thumbs up from the crew of Eos.

Salcombe... been there twice in the past 4 years. The staff attitude problem has been resolved. Still fairly pricey for a night on a bouy but I consoled myself thinking about the price of a double room in the hotel looking down on the town visitor moorings, and they pay to watch me eating porridge in my PJs in the cockpit.

  • Salcombe becomes a playground for the rich as soon as the private schools break up for the summer.
  • Be aware of standing waves which can rock the first batch of visitor moorings when a spring ebb runs against a southerly wind.
  • Salcombe is not good for provisions, it is a long hike to the top of the town and there you will discover a motley Spar type mini market.
  • Best fish & chips in the whole Universe can be found about 150m down the high street north of the town quay landing and I say this having dined out in "Yorkshire's best" F&C restaurant 2 evenings ago in Whitby.
  • The Winking Prawn beachside eatery 1 mile south of main town is good for oogling yummy mummies once the posh crowd has arrived.
  • Women folk will enjoy the beaches on the eastern shore while you attend to boat diy.
  • I had a good meal at the Boatswains Brasserie 4 years ago.http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restau...tswains_Brasserie-Salcombe_Devon_England.html

Great place

Some years ago, there was a trend to slag the place off on a regular basis, particularly harbour fees.

My only experiences have been overnight rests on passage to/fro places further west.

Thinking of stopping in for 2-3 days later in June as part of our summer cruise.

We love it and usually stop for a few days on the hook whenever we go past.
