What is it with some people?

It's a gripping read, if you get the wrong side of social media it bites your bits off

Frightening, social media can be a very powerful tool!

I notice the chap in the hotseat for hitting an anchored boat while below deck making tea is a 'keen Brompton cyclist'.

This could be a clue to why he thinks he wasn't at fault...

just in a mildy forensic way...

If that fishing boat, quite legitimately at anchor, was hit broadside on by that sailing boat, AND if those pics are a true and contemporaneous record of events, there seems to be a distinct lack of damage to the bowsprit and sharp end of the yawl, the damage appears to be high up at deck level on the fishing boat, and there's an air of almost nonchalance about the guys working the rods in the cockpit.

And the port side stanchions - at least four of them - appear to have been bent, and I am at a loss to see how the difference in freeboard between the Aquastar 38 and the Cornish Yawl can account for that damage at deck level.

Is this the full story ?

Er... no it isn't. Plenty of dickheads about, both mobos and raggies. Boat type has nothing to do with it.

Oh yes it does. We never had all these problems before the arrival of mobos & so called sports cruisers. Who IMO make up 95% or more of the dickheads you refer to.

20ft..are you sure?

Yes, I'm sure. I was so shocked, I didn't react at first. This happened twice more that day, with another 2 boats of the same ilk coming nearly as close, I made my thoughts clear then. One of the skippers had the audacity to wave and seemed to wonder why the gesture he got back was unfriendly.

It would have put a significant amount of water into the cockpit of some of the boats that often fish here.

However inexperienced / inconsiderate some of these people are, they must surely be aware of the effect wash can have on another vessel?

Utter bollocks. You may well be senile but I somehow doubt that you are that old (by the way the RMYC dates from 1905).

We have had a number of these tossers passing very close to us ( while overtaking us ) this season , I knew one of the boats and made of point of visiting him at his home berth the following day, it was fun. We left him a present, can't and will not say anymore but I know he will think twice next time! Ha ha

Oh go on do tell us :) we could make it become something of a norm such that they will all know what to expect & think twice. Personally I think both barrels of a 12 bore up their jacksy would make them think twice, but I understand thats not allowed these days :) Shame.

Did you get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning ?
Just had a gander at the RYMC site and the opening lines are: Officially founded in May 1905, The Motor Yacht Club was created by a group of enthusiastic gentlemen.
Gentlemen being the operative word. They didn't race around doing 25Kts + without a care or consideration for others. Which is the cause of all the problems today.

I can say with my hand on my heart that this has been our worst season for encountering idiots. And in all truth it has been a mixture of sail and power, the difference is that the yacht is often plodding along so we all have time to react but when the power boat is acting like an idiot he is often screaming along and that makes it far more scary for my family.

And that is from a motor boat family.

So it's common peole with boats that you object to, alles klar. You really are a stuck up dolt aren't you

I was right. You did get out of the wrong side of the bed :) Calling me a stuck up dolt....that really really is funny. If only you knew me you would understand that you couldn't be further from the truth. Common people............ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
Am I correct in assuming that you think speed is not the problem ?

If I should have invented a way to object to what JTB said, the only thing I can think of is that his post was so obviously true that it wasn't even worth writing it.

Objecting to it with a sweeping generalization like yours is something that beggars belief. :ambivalence:

the problem is, I suggest, in the amount of energy that has the potential for causing injury or damage if something goes wrong.

The Kinetic Energy formula makes it clear. Multiply the mass by the square of the velocity, then divide by 2.

The bigger and faster the boat - whether its a Volvo RTW racer, or a whizzy motorboat - the greater the energy, much greater.

Some of that energy will convert to engine and prop noise, some to wash and wake, though good design can diminish all of them. It's the failure to appreciate how the anti-social or dangerous application of that energy can impact people and the environment which is at the heart of our disagreements. The solution is education, or legislation, and I know which I would choose.

It was allowed when you were younger????

Don't be silly I don't expect the inadequate little snob has ever even fired a shotgun other than on a "corporate team building" day, let alone seen what the do to a person. If he had I doubt even someone with his shortcomings would make light of it.

Oh you do make me laugh. You keep on with your insults yet you know nothing about me. Water off a ducks back matey. I note you are quite new on here, so unless you are someone who has returned under another name, you may not have read some of my past postings & I forgive you for not understanding just how wrong you are. I am not going to give you the pleasure of relating my life history, many on here know much of it & will be laughing at you & your absurd comments. I certainly am :) :)

You people lead such serious lives.

Speed is irrelevant, wash is everything. A true planing hull leaves no discernible wash when up on the pure plane. But a semi planning or worse semi displacement at WOT close by is a dangerous animal, they have no idea how violent the wash can be - objects and children thrown around. A planing RIB or true planing sports cruiser is a delight to see at 30knots, you've got to admire the physics at work that make it possible and 20 feet isn't too close, plus if they're petrol powered the thunderous roar of those V8's does the soul good, but then I'm an ex AAC wallah :D
However a thundering semi at 15knots passing close by is utterly ignorant, but there's no shortage of ignorant people in MoBo's or yachts.

Reading some of the posts in this thread I thought that I had inadvertently strayed into the Lounge for a moment! :)

Clearly the behaviour described by the OP was poor seamanship and entirely unacceptable. Unfortunately, poor seamanship and poor bahaviour on the water isn't restricted to any particular group of people and I have seen plenty of both from sail and power boats. Probably worth saying that we sail as well as own a mobo....oh and our last boat was a 35 foot sportscruiser :)

I do wonder if sometimes some mobo's like to show off a bit. When we chartered a yacht in Greece it was quiet common for large motor yachts, that would otherwise have passed some distance from us, to alter course to pass close by. Really quite odd and a bit irritating as the wash would inevitably set us rolling about.
