Out in Poole bay about 1/5miles offshore fishing with the family. Anchored up, miles away from any channels and over small patch of rocks. The sea is like a mirror and visibility is perfect. Kids sitting on the swim platform with their legs in the water. To be sure it’s clear we aren’t going anywhere the anchor buoy is also up.

It’s very quiet and hardly any boats around except the odd raggy. Then a 35ft ish sports cruiser heads our way at circa 25 knots, he’s coming towards our stern so can clearly see the kids sat on the platform, as well as the anchor buoy, yet decides to pass within 20 feet of us, almost tipping the kids into the sea and causing our boat (MF805) to roll quite violently. This is repeated twice during the course of the afternoon.

I just don’t get why people do this, the area we were in was hard enough to safely anchor in due to the large number of pots/markers in the area and most would simply go around the whole lot rather than try to go through it, even if there were no other vessels there.

If you were to draw a line from Poole harbour to Yarmouth, then it would probably intersect the area were were in, but I just can't understand why some people are so inconsiderate? I wouldn't dream of passing so close to another boat if I didn't need to, anchored or not.

20 feet is a huge passing distance in a car.

Some people think boats with steering wheels are a kind of car.

Morons.

That kind of proximity of pass is bad manners, and both sides can be guilty of that.

The significant fact JTB is the amount of energy. A 35ft raggie at 7 kts has nothing like the energy of a 35ft mobo of the same mass at 25kts.

And then there is the noise and wake; mobos win hands down.

I feel for the OP, this is ridiculous ignorant behaviour,

over the last few weeks we have had similar. While coming round calshot a Beneteau Ombrine 32 with a grey hull passed us within 20ft at circa 25knots, it felt like I could have stepped onto his boat as it passed... . Then a fairline targa 34 came past us when we were heading towards Yarmouth (mid week where there was nobody but us around!!) with around 30ft to spare again doing 20+ knots... I just cant fathom it out, I guess its like people who tailgate on a motorway, perhaps they feel safe when they are close to somebody else!

The one thing it does do is send us into a violent roll which really pees me off....

sorry, rant over.

I think there is more too it than just being unaware of their surroundings. Perhaps curiosity to see what other people are doing and by the time they have got a good look, they are on top of you. Perhaps binoculars might be a worthwhile investment.

Thicko obviously had limited brain power combined with a selfish human nature.

I had some clown steer towards me on Saturday in a 50+ foot boat creating such a sharp wake my fore deck was underwater when I slowed up and pointed bow into big wall of water, the yacht near me also had experienced the same, I would loved to have got hold of him.

We have had a number of these tossers passing very close to us ( while overtaking us ) this season , I knew one of the boats and made of point of visiting him at his home berth the following day, it was fun. We left him a present, can't and will not say anymore but I know he will think twice next time! Ha ha

I wondered who left us that! :D

you are an excellent example of how people should behave.

But being serious it's very easy to find the location of a boat, ................ If anyone wants to really scare my family then I am going to try and locate them, and speak directly to the helms person, nothing wrong with that

Er... no it isn't. Plenty of dickheads about, both mobos and raggies. Boat type has nothing to do with it.

The people who buy sports boats do not buy them to bimble everywhere at 5 knots, they usually are the choice of boaters at the begining or their boating hobby, therefore less experienced and probably unaware of the chaos caused by wash at close quarters.
Have yet have anything damaged or people thrown all over the boat by any yacht. :)
