I am looking to avoid having numerous bottles of water onboard for drinking water and for kettle

I have read the review from by Motorboat Owner accessed via http://www.purewateronline.co.uk/

and also seen Post 10 from related thread last year - http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...o-need-to-soften&highlight=water+purification

Was thinking of - 420400 Nature Pure Quick Change with Faucet - from Purewater website with a separate cold tap (leaving Hot/Cold taps as they are)

Any suggestions and appraisals of what's good and what's not would be much appreciated

Cheers

Every boat I have owned, I have always fitted the Seagull water purifier bought from General Ecology. Its great having fresh drinking water from the tap. The down side, a replacement filter is around £60.00. General Ecology say they are good for xxxx? amount of litres but I change the filter at the beginning of each season.

Edit

I fit this one

+1

I just had one fitted with separate tap.

Had it before and it seemed to turn tank water into bottled spring water.

Thanks for info. The 0.1 micron is more expensive mind but wonder whether its noticeable from 0.4 micron. I'll see what others say before I take plunge. What to try and fit before Easter. Cheers

A Seagull is obviously a fantastic bit of kit, but for the basic purchase price, you could purchase 5,000 litres of Tesco bottled water....??

+1 for the General Ecology Seagull.

Fitted one a couple of weeks ago. Have kept the 'regular' taps in the galley and swapped an unused salt water tap for the one in the Seagull kit. The S/S holder for the filter is a beautiful bit of kit IMHO and apart from needing to contort like an oranutan to fit it, very pleased with the taste of the water. They sell at a discount at the boat show unfortunately so unless you can survive on bottled water until September...

Only minor issue that I can see is that you only know when the filter needs replacing when the flow rate drops off. In view of that (and the fact that for max economy you need to buy at the show) I bought an extra (spare) filter with the full kit. It's true what Alpha22 says, but SWMBO wanted bottled and I got fed up with carrying...

Prhperio - what discount did you get for unit and cartridges at boat show ?
Alpha22 - problem is I don't want to carry 1000s bottles of 2.5L of water ! We also end up keep 6-7 bottles on board which is also a pain and waste of space
New (2002) boat to me and as planning to keep for many years thought best to fit this as early as possible for best value

Def the Seagull IV from Gen Ecology, been using one for three years, living aboard (house in Greece casting off next year) and all drinking water incl kettle fills from it.
Buy at the show for best deals, I got an upgrade to a SS tap, well worth it...

Can't remember the percentage but I've just checked the bill and for the Seagul IV X-1F with faucet I paid £345. It's here on their web site http://www.purewateronline.co.uk/701017-X-1F-C-Seagull-R-IV.html (so I see retail is £393).

I also bought a spare filter (RS-1SG Cartridge) for £60 (web price £78) and they dropped in a couple of bits to connect to our 15mm water piping FOC.

I imagine that unless you use a huge amount of drinking water, if you bought the main unit now you wouldn't need a replacement filter for some time (they reckon they last a year IIRC) so could at least pick that up at the boat show.

I bought one of those Seagulls a few years ago.... bloody noisy and smokey thing it was. Had it on the boat for a few years... never did work out how to get water out of it. It dripped oil on the deck so it had to go.... (I'll get my coat!!)

Think an old girlfriend was nicknamed seagull back in the day - bit of a non-starter !

Ive been using the Seagull IV from Gen Ecology for 2 years now and been really pleased. I linked to tri-flow tap rather than faucet. I need to get a new filter in next few weeks and recall the suppliers ceasing business. Ive not checked though (new job). My filter cartridge was RS-1SG #78800.

I've had a General Ecology system on my last three boats and think they're v good. I believe that one of their 'unique' features is that they've developed a filter that is as fine as 0.1 micron and that's important because e-coli viruses are around 0.25-0.7 micron in diameter! Anyway, don't quote me on all this but I recall that this meant that even pretty poorly treated water (of the sort one might get in parts of Europe, though not the UK) can be made safe by this system which, as you say, saves humping huge slabs of water in the sweltering heat!

One final point is that it does nothing to help with water that TASTES bad - eg the water in Cala D'or is IMHO undrinkable, taste-wise. And the Seagull system doesn't help with that, unfortunately.

The chief officer buys a couple of 5 litre bottles of water from the supermarket in the spring and we refill them from a mains supply.
That works for us . No filters required.
