what is an \'average\' oil pressure - Perkie 4108 ??

I have finally got a reading on the oil gauge after changing all the cables (x3) nine times - or was it 27 !! So the reading is 6 bar or 80 something psi. No correcto pienso ! I've taken the sensor out of the block and it looks clean (it has two electrical connections) so perhaps the clock is dud. Any ideas please? Someone earlier said the sensor might be blocked or dirty so what can I do to clean it? But what is normal-ish for a pre-1980 engine? Thanks as always in advance.

hi i run my 4108 on 10w-30 oil ,oil pressure at tick over is 50-60 over 1800 rpm 80 psi, dont use 5w-30 or you will have no oil pressure at tick over, happy sailing

The difference between a 5 and a 10w is small and I have difficulty seeing how you would fail to get any pressure using a 5-30.
Anyway - OP was asking what is Perkins Oil Pressure rating - not what oil to use. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If your oil pressure is way above what it should be, that suggests the pressure relief valve is jammed. Way to tell is to start the engine, let it get warm and then increase to max revs whilst watching the oil pressure. Does it get to (say) half revs and then platteau? If so the valve is working though it might nor be working as it should. If the oil pressure just continues to rise, the relief valve is jammed.

Take care in doing this. If the valve is jammed and the pressure rises too high you can blow seals in the engine. Dealing with a jammed or non functioning valve shouldnt be too difficult depending on where it is located - usually under the oil filter.

On the other hand, all the problem could simply be the resistance of the wires to the guage.
