Thinking of the breed and some pix on here.
A boat where the creature comforts for a given length have produced a hull shape (and tophamper?) that may require use of the engine to gain reasonable progress to windward.
As for being silly to not have an engine: Annie Hill's reason for finally getting a small saildrive was to have charging ability for complient navlights. Oil ones don't have the range.
They managed to go big distances without an auxilary. But Marinas have reasonably sticky objections to sailing in.
