What is a motor sailer?

Thinking of the breed and some pix on here.
A boat where the creature comforts for a given length have produced a hull shape (and tophamper?) that may require use of the engine to gain reasonable progress to windward.

As for being silly to not have an engine: Annie Hill's reason for finally getting a small saildrive was to have charging ability for complient navlights. Oil ones don't have the range.
They managed to go big distances without an auxilary. But Marinas have reasonably sticky objections to sailing in.

No one's mentioned one of these yet...

'Cos it isn't a motorsailor - can't make good progress, in adverse conditions, under either sail or motor.

Maybe can't make good progress at all, in adverse conditions.

I understand that McGregors are fair weather boats. Nothing wrong with that, horses for courses.

A motorsailor's essence is being a decent all-weather (or most weather) boat.

So how about these stats -

Power: Cruising speed: 7.5 knots, max 10 knots, highest ever 16.5 knots, Speed to windward in F6: 6 knots, 10 BHP per tonne

Sail: Average speed: 7.5 knots, max continuous: 11 knots, highest ever 17 knots

18000 miles logged 1700 engine hours

Have I got a motor sailer?

oh I dunno

Certainly seems to qualify. Assuming you're describing a boat's performance.

Oh I dunno...

Interesting video, 'tho as it was filmed by Mr McGregor it's clearly not an impartial commentary on the boat's abilities. The waves looked more like 10' than 18'. And I'd be interested to see the boat under power in similar conditions.

But I guess the video shows that most boats are capable of more than their crews.
